I'm searching for information on this particular engine I have. This Tee Dee has a custom cylinder which is not blued but appears to be nickle plated. The cylinder walls are plated as well. This Tee Dee is rear exhaust and has a custom manifold made from aluminum to house the pipe. I don't have a pipe for it. I do have a pipe for a CS engine but it doesn't fit the outlet of the manifold. This engine has 3 fluted ports cut into the sides of the cylinder. The venturi is extremely large which appears to be a Kustom Kraftmanship item. There's no needle valve assembly as it obviously had a remote needle using bladder. I have a Cox proto mag pan with a Cox fiberglass top. This is one impressive engine and I have run it only once. I have little knowledge on running a speed engine on pipe. I would venture to bet the crank in this engine was more than likely heat treated to withstand higher than normal operating rpm's. This may even be designed to run on one bladed propellers. Did anyone ever make a pipe for a Tee Dee? If anyone has experience with an engine like this I'm all ears. Ken

I'm quite sure it's a rare piece. Being new to the forum, I'm a bit unsure on how to post pictures. I will figure it out though. Kustom Kraftmanship used to sell the cylinders uncut. I'm sure that is what I have here. The only exhaust port exit is on the rear of the cylinder within the manifold. The manifold itself is really interesting as it's welded aluminum. I did find instructions on the Cox fiberglass top to be used on the mag pan. It just doesn't show how to construct the wings. Dale Kirn though had a good article from the 80's detailing his speed plane the "Spullet". I will try for pictures soon. Thanks, Ken and Shawn

As previously mentioned it's likely custom work. Pictures will tell all and there are many knowledgeable folks on here that can help you find some answers.

Speed flyers made some TD's with rear exhaust /tuned pipes. Versions I seen were crude but some degree of sucess.

The cox magnesium speed pan is super rare. Worth more than the engine I guess.

The speed pans for Cox engines were very well made and lite. I have several of them but had more some time ago. Started a White Night but wing warped bad. Need to change way its made but cool little speed ship. Space hopper drops right in as the TD .049. Once common item, now very hard to find.

      Well here goes my first attempt at some pictures. Well it seemed to all go well. As I stated you can see the nickle plating on the exterior of the cylinder. The plane pictured was a build I finished from another flyer. He picked up the plane half finished. The leadouts go through the wing. I had to split the wing in half and place tubing inside and rewire the leadout. I made my own custom tank for it. This plane took an extenisve amount of time to complete. The lower half is all mahogany all carved out. I have the wall thickness very thin and I'm almost through it around the engine area. A Tee Dee .051 power it and I usually run APC's 4.75 x 4 props. I would like to get something in a higher pitch. I get a little bit of funny business half way through the flight then she smooths out. I would like to go with a bladder if possible. This is why the mag pan and the fiberglass top are on my priority list. I think I can get some serious speed with it. Ken and Shawn

That venturi is a piece of brass which has been threaded 1/4-32 then turned down on a lathe. As you can see the opening is quite large. The crank cut out has also been altered as well. My problem though is I believe this engine needs the pipe to work correctly. It does turn up fairly well. I just know that when a pipe is on there it has a strong relationship between how much the engine breathes and how much fuel it can pull into the cylinder. I had this project on the backburner for quite some time. I do have a CS engine that uses a pipe. Unfortunately the pipe doesn't quite fit. I may have to make an adapter for it. I want to try the single blade prop on it as well. Ken and Shawn

Pretty neat little engine! I assume it is a #4 cylinder. Dual bypass dual boosts?

One thing I noticed was the 3 fin knurled head, we had a discussion about those a while back. The other thing is no Needle valve. How does one dial it in?

So, looks be a standard TD and modified by someone who knew what they were doing.

No I think that the cylinder was one of those "blank" unported and unmachined ones that cox sent out to some people.

True, except if it was filled with nickel it would be easy to tell.

I think you are right though as machining it to get the right piston fit again would have been daunting.

This engine by far is anything near a stock tee dee other than the carb body and case. The cylinder is not a #4 but a custom machined cylinder. Kustom Kraftmanship offered unmachined cylinders as well as Cox did to the speed enthusiasts. The majority of cylinders have a single bypass or a double, this engine has 3 ports and transfer channels as well. The only cut out for exhaust is in the rear where it exits into the manifold. The cylinder walls are plated as well.Obviously when the walls get plated a certain amount of material is added. The cylinder is then honed usually on a Sona hone which is a vertical mill that uses a diamond hone that can remove .0005 at a time. The main problem with a Tee Dee is that it will start to shed parts when it starts getting into the high 26k rpm range. Whoever did this engine put a lot of effort into building it. The crank cutouts have been radiused to prevent the crank from breaking across the cutout. I just put that head on when I ran it. That was not the head that was on it. It had a Glo Bee head on it when I received it. The engine uses a remote needle valve. Kustom Kraftmanship sold a needle valve with a bracket that would fit on the mag pan. To pinch the bladder off the feed tubing would exit the mag pan forming a loop approx 1" and would return back into the pan and into the engine. You would pinch the tubing against the side of the pan using your thumb until the engine was running then you would release your thumb. I do not have a video of the engine running. I did however find some info on the pan and fiberglass top shell. These planes are designed to fly on monoline which is something I just don't want to attempt right now. I will fly it on a two line setup even though the speed will inherently suffer from the drag of two lines. I have to fabricate a button bellcrank and get some other building tips on how to construct the wings. The CS high performance .049 has really blown away anything the Tee Dee could dish out. I just want to do it for my own personal satisfaction and the fact I like Cox engines. Ken

Yeah unless he some how filled it with JB weld and put an oiled and worn piston it it while drying.

         I hope this can clarify what I've been explaining as far as this cylinder goes. I provided a picture of the engine with the pipe and remote needle valve with the bladder hooked to it to show how it was run. The counterweight isn't installed on the prop to offset the one blade which is carbon fibre. The blade needs to be deflashed and sanded and polished yet.  The guys that ran speed back in the 70's through 80's ran nitro as high as 70% using propylene oxide mixed with the fuel. I would like to know if any of these guys are still around and could suggest how to run this engine. When I ran the engine I used 40% nitro. I could easily put this engine in the plane above. The problem is getting the pipe to exit which would require me really cutting up the plane. I basically want to copy what I have there using the mag pan and fiberglass top. Ken

I like the cylinder! I didn't realize it was a collar around it. I thought it was welded to the cylinder. lol!

Looks like a nice setup. I hope you can get a pipe to fit and put it into the air!

Really neat seeing some of that technology. AMA still lists speed events in their rules, wonder how many people are active in it these days, and what current designs and mods are?

Guess I'll have use the Google: magazines (like MAN) which used to cover all types of flying, building and competition seem pretty useless these days. Mostly just describe how quickly you can put the decals on a "kit" and stick the batteries in it.

Funny thing is, I was just thinking along the same lines as that collar to redirect the exhaust to a muffler!
