The post about Ken Willard's School Boy reminded me of another one of his designs called "Pool Boy". I built two of these in the 1980's, never flew them off-water as intended, but DID put a lot of low-level cruising on both. The survivor is pretty rough, but still serviceable, and may take to the air again.

The Plan Number is 9801 from the old "Model Builder Magazine"...issue Sept. 1980. Not sure who owns the plans now, but bet that they are out there somewhere.

It's an extremely sweet-natured little plane, and I have flown it with both an .010 & an .020. I've also left off the bottom wing and flown it as a parasol with the hatch covered. At one point, I decided that it'd make a nice pusher design, and mounted the .020 on the trailing edge of the top wing. So, it's pretty tolerant of "experimenting".

The cabane strut engine mounting also lends itself nicely to installing whatever size external tank you might care to use, and with just two servos drawing power, you can build a cruiser that would fly as long as you'd care to pilot it.

Thanks Travis! Pool Boy II (Pool Boy I was short-lived) was my "Pack Around Plane" for several years in the 90's. It lived a hard life, and I'm surprised that I've still got it's carcass.

With the tiny radio gear we have now, equipped with a throttle, it'd make a great little plane for water or snow.

Hey Mitch....it is a good-natured little plane, and with today's radio gear, you could build it super-light, and STILL fly it with a throttled .010 or .020. I'm not sure who owns the plans now. Maybe some of our expert internet sleuths could find it. If not, and you DO decide to build it, let me know and I'll try to get some plans to you.

P.S. The stitched hinges are about the only type I use any more. The ones on this 20 year-old Pool Boy are still as good as new.

Go to the Outerzone site posted above and search on Willard. There are nearly 30 plans listed. What I recently learned was that Ken Willard has a LOT of floatplane designs --- many more than I ever expected.
