How do I get the brown off my piston top?
Hi lads,
Take a close look at the top of this cox .049 medallion piston and you`ll see a brown color.
Do I need to remove this or shouldn`t I worry about it?..What solution is best to clean it if need be?
This is also the engine I was talking about last time with a throttle ring and a slight burr
near the port area. This is a Medallion .049 R/C with dual bypass cylinder.
Cheers!

Neverdull by Eagle One. You can find it at auto parts stores or even wal-mart. Works great. May require some rubbing if it's really baked on.

Thanks, but I don`t think we`ve got Wal-Mart over here in Australia, but I`ll see
what I can find that`s similar. Can I buy that stuff on ebay I wonder or does it
come under dangerous goods, etc?

Ha! Sorry about that didn't look at the location. It's pretty benign stuff. It's cotton batting impregnated with a polishing chemical. It's been around just shy of forever so there is a good chance it's available over there if not under a different brand name.
Brasso may work as well. Again no idea what it's called there. Basically it removes tarnish from Brass and copper.

I feel like Bertie Wooster because I have
A chap who cleans mine for me.
Hello Ron
However one of Johnnies cheats is mix a bit
Of synthetic based fuel in with your castor
Based, run a tank through and Roberts yer muvvas bruvva.
Be careful not to mention synth on here too
Often though, it becomes a little like Village of the Damned
But with more pitch forks.

TD/Medalion external differences
Please correct me if I am incorrect.
I've always thought TD .049's had BLACK carburetor bodies and Medallion .049's had RED carburetor bodies. (I know the internal differences that separate the two)
Aside from the color differences are the carburetor bodies identical and interchangeable??

How do I get the brown off my piston top?
Now that was what I tried to work out yesterday if this engine is a 1970s Cox Tee Dee .051
with a red plastic carb body.
This is very similar to a Cox #200 Tee Dee .051
Displacement: .051 CI .8517 CC
Weight: 1.6 Oz
But now that you mention it, it probably is a #240-1 Cox Medallion .049 R/C which also had
a red carb body but a different needle valve fixture?
Thanks for picking that up lads!

Re: How do I get the brown off my piston top?
Aw, come on, please answer my question in the previous post.
I have, sitting in front of me, a 1973 Cox TD "jewel case" .049 that I obtained from Paul Gibeault 0f Alberta, Canada. It is NIB and was manufactured when Cox was still in Santa Ana, California.
Guess what? It has BLACK carburetor body.
How can it be considered a Medallion .049?

All medallion bodies are red
Td .049 bodies are supposed to be black
Td .051 bodies are suplosed to be red
Yes people have found .051s with black bodies and so on, may be a factory mistake, may be the modelers thing.
Dave, your TD sounds right to have a black body.
You can change the TD body with a Medallions but the engine may not run as,well
Re: How do I get the brown off my piston top?
I think there may be some confusion with the carb bodies between the two.
As far as I know, red bodies were for .051 and black for .049.

MFD:
"Td .051 bodies are suplosed to be red" - MFD
I believe that you are in error, my friend. I have a correct TD .051 which also has a black carb body.
To the best of my kmoeldge the distinction between RED and BLACK carb bodies lies in whether the engine is a Medallion or a TD.
(The forum has discussed the INTERNAL differences some months ago. Medallions are not producted to the production standards of TD's and are therefore less expensive when new)

Is your .051 NIB? A black body or top end could have been placed. Especially with new parts readily available. I think you are right though.
All Medallion bodies are red, and also serve as the intake. TD's have the metal venturi/spraybar/intake which screws in.

Re: How do I get the brown off my piston top?
It's not just the colour or internals between Td and Medallion Dave
The Medallion has a one piece body with integral Venturi and
Needle valve whereas the Td is multi componented.
Is that a word..... ?

Re: How do I get the brown off my piston top?
Hmmm!
All Medallion bodies are red...true.
TD .049 carb bodies are SUPPOSED to be black and TD .051 bodies are SUPPOSED to be red. This provided an easy way to identify them. The REAL way to identify an .051 is with the groove cut in the lower circumference of the piston. Pistons are NOT switchable between .049 and .051 cylinders. Piston/cylinder SETS are switchable between engines.
Some folks have switched bodies and some were probably accidently shipped with the wrong color body. Additionally, when the last ones were shipped apparently Estes ran out of black bodies because guys were reporting getting red bodies on .049's.

Re: How do I get the brown off my piston top?
Forgot to mention in my last post. Most Cox piston tops have a copper coating to dissipate heat. Don't spend time trying to remove the copper. Better left intact. :-)

Just leave it like it is, the build up usually tends to just be a thin layer anyway. If you use any polishing compound you'll have to wash everything very carefully (preferably using an ultrasonic bath) or you risk getting polishing particles elsewhere too.

Thanks George! That makes more sense than anything I've read here this morning.
The obcessive-compulsive among us will scrub away their engine's protective coatings.
As long as my engines run like I want them to I don't mess with them. I've better things to do like cut my toenails.

Re: How do I get the brown off my piston top?
I have heard putting a Medallion carb on a TD makes it more agreeable for cranking and drawing fuel from unpressurized tanks; Medallion qualities. I'm sure it tones down the TD's power a little.SuperDave wrote:...Aside from the color differences are the carburetor bodies identical and interchangeable??
I guess the opposite would turn a Medallion into an uncooperative little twit.

How do I get the brown off my piston top?
Hi lads,
I think I started a storm in a tea cup?..But it was fun having so many of you guys
participating. Thanks for all the positive feedback!
I thoroughly inspected my engine and yes you guy`s were right; it is a Medallion .049
but no-one mentioned the throttle ring?
Yes, I dug deep into my cox archives and I found out that my engine is a:
Medallion .049 R/C (0.8cm3) Manufactured in 1969-1987 (#240-1, ECJ #100)
equipped with the simple rotating throttle ring mounted on outside of cylinder.
Thankyou all!

Re: How do I get the brown off my piston top?
Another thing to check for if you suspect that the engine has been altered is the crankshaft. The TD has a square opening for porting and the Medallion has a round hole (at least mine do!).
The Medallion was intended and thus designed to be more of a sport engine, while the TD was designed for all-out competition. Both were VERY highly regarded in their day. I know some folks like to tinker and will switch parts to get a little different performance, but IMHO both are great FOR THEIR INTENDED PURPOSE in stock form.
Fast forward 50 years and you find folks comparing a basicly 50 year old design (with improvements) .049/.051 with newly designed .061's. Well Duh! An .049 vs an .061...regardless of age. Still, when you use larger props the TD holds its own with lugging power.
Sorry for rambling.
