I just purchased a Cox .049 8cc fuel tank..no venturi gasket??
Hi lads,
I just received by post a cox .049 8cc fuel tank (black plastic) and I got
tank front & back, needle valve, plastic tube & spring, reed , retainer, and a free crankcase gasket.
But there was no rubber venturi gasket?..has anyone had the same happen to them?,,,
and are these plastic tanks any good?
P.S. Is the crankcase gasket supposed to be glued on or just placed on? I checked one of
my .020 pee wee`s and it seemed that the crankcase gasket was glued or is that just
what happens to it when engine has been started and it hardens up?

It's a needle valve spring.
A venturi gasket is not part of a tank assembly but a separate item. They need to be replaced occassionally because they do harden. If you want a more resiliant venturi gasket, slice off a small piece of silicone fuel line and make your own as I do.
They are not glued on.

Re: I just purchased a Cox .049 8cc fuel tank..no venturi gasket??
The crankcase gaskets don't use sealant, but often bond themselves to the tank or case due to the heat and compression from tightening the case screws. They can usually be peeled away, using a little heat from a hair dryer and a razor blade. The spring in the photo goes on the needlevalve body, and can be replaced by a #4 washer and a piece of silicon fuel tubing that will help seal the needlevale against air-leaks.

How about the plastic tube and spring, I`m having a bit of trouble trying to make it stay at the bottom of tank.
I`m going to use the engine for free flying.

The tube is the fuel pick-up tube for the NVA. The smaller spring goes within the pick-up tubr to act as a filter.
The tube is either placed at eight o'clock or straight down depending on the type of flying done; CL = 8 o'clock; others, straigt down at 6 o'clock for others where centifugal force is not a consideration.

For Free Light or R/C, the pickup tube needs to go to the bottom of the tank. It has to weave it's way around the Venturi tube and tank screws. I cut mine just long enough that it catches the inside lip of the backplate, and stays there while I push the tank on the assembly.
Rusty has a video on Youtube showing the importance of the tiny fuel tube spring in using capillary action to literally help draw the fuel into the pickup tube, so it's a good idea to make sure and install it.

Should the cut on the bottom of the plastic fuel tube be facing the back of the tank?..and
should the spring poke out a little from the bottom of tube?

Different how?
Are you sure that one isn't two shims stuck together?

You may have a glowhead gasket mixed in with the timing shims...they look very similar. Check to see if it fits nicely into the top of the cylinder...if so, that's where it goes.

No, there are 3 shims, 2 of them were together, I seperated them and they look identical but
the other one seems thinner and I could see what looked like small bluish/green stains on the copper, like when
it oxidizes or something?..like water has got to it.

Hey Dave ! I figure the different color IS from age or a bit of oxidation...shouldn't affect it's function...

It is considerably thinner than the other 2. wouldn`t that have some effect on the compression?

I`ve just found out that this item includes TWO 0.010" & ONE 0.015" to Mix/Match if Desired
it`s a new production item.

But I still think the the 0.015 shim is not right, it`s too thin where it should be slightly thicker?
It must be faulty?

Re: I just purchased a Cox .049 8cc fuel tank..no venturi gasket??
In answer to the questions (some of which already have been answered):
The tank assembly includes a venturi gasket and the crankcase gasket is not "free"' it is a part you paid for.
In our case we slip the venturi gasket onto the tank's venturi post.
The crankcase gasket is not glued on.
Email us if you need a picture of how the pick-up line is attached/ laid out. The spring should be completely inserted.
Yes, the tanks are good. The aluminium ones may be better but are also more expensive.
We supply 3 timing shims; 2 each .010" and one of .015". This is so that the modeller has the following shim choices:
.010
.015
.020
.025
.035
Thus maximizing possibilities.
The .015 one was cut from a different sheet of copper that would have sported a bit of oxidation. Fully normal with copper and, no, this would not affect the operation.

If the tank assembly was bought from us and the venturi gasket is truly missing please email nichole@coxengines.ca and she will send you one.
