Cox rubber spinner info.

Cox rubber spinner info.
I have a big red one that I installed on my bee. A few laps into a run it slung off. No biggie except the engine speed picked up an the plane flew much quicker. What gives?
Do the rubber spinners create that much drag? Or was it a balance issue?

Re: Cox rubber spinner info.
Or could it be that the spinner is just more weight for the engine to turn??? It could get up to higher rpms without the spinner because the spinner was dead weight for the engine to spin. There is a difference in speed without the spinner because the spinner doesent generate any thrust...
At least that waht I think....

Could very well be, it's a good theory anyway. Either way it's staying off. I had it on for beginner reasons....as in forced uncontrolled landings. I haven't come in that hard for a number of flights now.

The fact that it came off leads me to believe that either something was wrong with it or it was installed incorrectly. Are you running with just the hub or did you remove that too?

Well, it would be pretty hard to install incorrectly however, it was an old spinner so it may have just plain worn out. Yes, I am just running the hub at the moment but, I have a few spare aluminum spinners kicking around. I just liked having the extra protection up front!

Re: Cox rubber spinner info.
Ron, my findings were the same as yours. I had several RTF Cox planes in the 70's and all of them had the red rubber spinner. They all stayed on as well and were quite difficult to remove. Recently I had this reddish pinkish style that is pretty much worthless as it just flies off as you indicated. I was only using it for appearance. Cox in the 70's made a large red and a small red one that worked quite well. Probably as you stated, not running true and poor fit allows it to fly off. I've also had those studs strip out quite a bit. You would think the aluminum part that you tighten would fail but the steel stud goes first. Ken

Hmmm,
I thought the hubs were steel, guess I best look again. To be truthful and at risk of blaspheming.....I think the rubber spinners are unattractive, but they may look good if they flow into the lines of the model. On my Wizard it looks like a huge clown nose up front.
I do agree it was probably a poor fit at best and it just slung off. I have never used one before and it was the only one I had. I didn't like the experience though.
I may try them again down the road.

I have two versions of those hubs, some are aluminum and the other is steel with a black finish on them. The steel does seem to hold the spinner on better. Ken

I have only used them occasionally, but the first time I installed one I found that I had not fully seated the spinner on the hub.cribbs74 wrote: Well, it would be pretty hard to install incorrectly however, it was an old spinner so it may have just plain worn out. I was not aware that there were both steel and aluminum ones. If it is a steel one, perhaps impact has very slightly bent the stud, or if it is aluminum perhaps the front of the hub is bent very slightly.
I would suggest removing the glow head and spinning over the engine while checking for a very slight offset at the front of the hub. Also check propeller tips to see that the drive plate is not crooked. Possibly something is off-center and the additional weight of the spinner is compounding it.
Also check inside the spinner to see that nothing is damaged, etc, that would cause it to seat off-center.
Good luck.

Re: Cox rubber spinner info.
Just to clarify matters, my father was a machinist now retired. I asked him about these aluminum hubs and he told me he had made them. He made them for the plastic spinners actually. That clears up why I have these and I have what I found to be 3 of them currently. Ken
