Just finished my 2nd 1/2A Ringmaster for the Brothers of the Ring flyathon this weekend. Of course it has a .049 babybee for power. We will see how it flies this weekend.

Heya Jim,

Good to see you over here! Did you build another to have two or did the first one expire.

I am still enjoying mine. I had to rebuild and reinforce mine due to a mishap. It's a great little plane and plenty tough!

Let us know how the Ring Flyathon goes.

Well your not the first one Jim! Pics are a little tricky. There is a sticky thread up top that gives a quick tutorial on how to post pics.

I smacked my Ring in good while attempting to go inverted. So I understand how that goes!

Ha!

No that pic is an old one. She has been repaired since then.

Rusty, I learned about the power of Epoxy since, so I doubt I will break a wing again.

Happydad, nickname? Oh boy here it comes......... lol!

You're in tyhe Airforce, right? So I suppose we shouldn't call you Crash Cribbs.

Let's show a little deference to Cribbs. He's new to "ukie" flying where crashes are seemingly inevitable.

I wiped out several Stering S-3 full-sized Ringmasters while learning to fly inverted. It's an orientation thing. Laughing It takes time to overcome the "shaky knees" syndrome.

Thanks Dave,

I consider the crack-ups to be a right of passage. I don't mind the jesting as I am sure everyone who flies has crashed at least once.

I spent many years building planes and bench running engines and I am tickled that I can now take it to the next level and actually utilize my engines and models At first I thought control line would be boring as there are limitations , but I now realize it is very challenging to do even the simple manouvers and rewarding at the same time.

I do understand the shaky knees syndrome. I find I need to just commit to the manouver and hope for the best! Crashing is learning and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Ron

Hey, since he's a noobie to CL, just be thankful I didn't suggest Baby Cribbs. lol! Nah, Cribbs you won't be a noob for much longer, so we'll just stick with calling you Ron.

Jim:

I recommend 35 foot flying lines for your "Ring". Doing so slows the speed that you'll need to rotate as you fly. Thin dacron flying lines work best for me as they reduce the air drag that you will experience.

Remember to put a weight on the outside wing tip. Start with 1/4 ounce and, it needed, reduce or add the amount depending on how the planes flys.

Supe Dave, the Ringmaster that steriling came out with was the S-1 the S-3 was a Yak 9. My S-1 is a total scratch build. I agree that crashing is part of the rite of passage, I'm just starting to get through that part of it, I just scored a black widow on the bay for 30 bucks, I see a new 1/2A build in my future. I have the plans for a 1/2A P-51 that is quick and easy. Its profile with a non builtup wing. The RM flyathon was awesome, we put up 21 flights in about 4 hrs with five ringmasters, 3 S-1's and two baby's. I managed a couple of loops with my S-1 with a fox .35 on it. My baby RM seemed awefully heavy and slow so I brought it home and took the landing gear off of it, it has a baby bee on it. Talk to you again later

No joke Jethro, nice RR1 too. Looks like new. That ought to be a pretty snappy flier.

Jim,

My Ring was a little nose heavy so I added some lead to the tail. I have landing gear with aluminum hub wheels. I imagine my weight is up there.

My Ring will VOG off the stooge and will loop an go inverted whenever I ask it too. I have a black widow on mine. Maybe you just need to swap the Babe bee out.

The engine is actually a 'Bee' anodised to look like a RR-1, a project i did with Leo years ago.

Yes, that may be true, I'm thinking the bee is not up to the task. I may put the new black widow on it. Those RR-1's sure are pretty, can someone tell me about them. I'm not very knowledgeable on Cox engines. I own 4, a babybee. a surestart, a .15 tee dee and now a black widow.

Hey Jim,

The RR1 is a rear rotor valve engine that looks much like a standard bee type engine. Performance wise it's pretty healthy, but varies from engine to engine. You can find a little info on Cox engines here:
