Heres some photos of the Testors Cosmic Wind from mid 70's that Cox later ended up with?

Last December i had meet Ernie Pettit, former VP at Testors. One of the questions I ask him was: "How did Cox end up with the Testors Cosmic wind model?" The answer was pretty simple, but not what I thought. Testors sold off their gas powered line of toys to Tyco Corp. and then Tyco sold it to Cox, mystery solved!

It just kinda bugs me that Cox would stoop so low to buy/lease/rent a mold from Testors!

This isn't the only time something like this had happened, after Comet went under the Tri Pacer ended up with Aurora powered by the Stallion .049 and their Se5a D-7, p-40 & p-51 as screw together plastic kits.

Its possible and was common to modify the mold of these planes over the years. Some of the Comet models went thru two, three, four different engine configurations.

Here's one example, the Comet Regulas was latter re-introduced as a 'T38' with a cockpit added and the 'new' .059 Cub reedie with push button spring starter!

Depends on the mold. Some injection forming molds have hundreds of pieces that fit together, including cavity sections, springs, sprues, ejectors, etc. This high of a number is more of an exception though.

In some cases the large number of pieces is to allow for less complex and more accurate machining of the mold cavities. In other cases it is to allow version changes without replacing the entire assembly, but breaking it down and replacing a part (this is a BIG job all the same)

Wish it flew as good as it looks... I've still got the orig. red spinner and prop... was either a 5-2 or 5-4... but I have them both (with the spinner bracket on the props' hub) If it was designed (by Cox...) more to the size of the PT-19, it might have flown better. I'd love to build a built-up balsa version, maybe 22-24"/110-120 sq. and more elevator area.

Actually, the very first Testor Cosmic Wind (Testor's first mold created after acquisition of AMF Wen Mac) was about 40% larger (approx. size of Cox PT-19 but somewhat heavier and with rubber band crash 'em and put 'em back together assembly) than the version under discussion. It was powered by an FRV Testor-Mac .049 and flew OK. Came in orange, white and metal plate versions.

Yes.. Those YouTube/Stunt Hangar videos of the "Wild Bill Netzeband interviews I and II" history of his years with "Testors" are quite fascinating.

As previously noted; I have the smaller "Cox version" of this model. I am hard-pressed to fly it with the "ExModel Engine's" LYNX high-performance reed-valve prize-engine... which I won by "luck of the draw" through the CEF Engine of the Month contest a while back..

Tony LeVier was the designer. He wasn’t tall in stature, but the spelling is actually “Little Toni”

It may be a play on his name. I have no idea.

Thanks Ron. This would be a cool little model to fly again. I realize that it's somewhat "rare".. but it was designed for level "roundy-round" flight.. so there's less temptation to take it over the top of the circle for a stunt.

I'm trying to cobble together a couple of Testors "Fly-em" model airplanes that are missing parts. I have a complete P-40 that I can use as a guide to reconstruct it's tail section, but I need a 1/1 tracing of the Cosmic Wind's wing - version 1 I believe.

I would only need one half of the wing which should fit on standard 11 X 8 1/2 paper.  I have had pretty good luck reproducing those parts using sheet balsa.  Or if anyone has a better idea?

Anyway, I have a white BF-109 notch valve Fly 'Em that is missing its vertical stab. Some new graphics would be nice too. Somebody holla at me if they can help.

That would be great Rene,  I was thinking a PM scan or PDF of a tracing that I could print out on this end?  Half of the wing would work and I could just flip it over and ball park the rest.  Doesn't have to be exact.

I have roughed out the P-40's tail in 1/16" balsa.  I did the complete tail section on this yellow AT-6/Texan in balsa and it's presentable and probably flyable.  Victor once pointed out that it has wickard dihedral and it does. Trying to work it out.

Ok, I spelled "wicked"  (Morally very bad - Evil) wrong.  I spelled it phonetically (above) as pronounced by my New Hampshire buddies of many years ago.

When I visited my old home town of Raymond for the first time in fifty years last May I discovered their favorite descriptor for anything was sic "wickerd" as in - That was a wickerd snow storm we had last year or - Remember that wickerd old Ford you had that would outrun the town cops.....but I digress.

Victor (tico……..) pointed out the excessive dihedral of the pictured model where the wing tips pointed towards the stars rather than the baseboards.  

Best picture I can come up with now, but I have posted pictures in the past here that show it better.

And yes, Rene to the rescue.  I just printed out the wing and will use it as a template.  But, using sheet balsa there will be no dihedral in the wing, not necessary for a C/L model anyway.  Wing will be flat but with camber as introduced by the flap under the wing.  

BTW, he also criticized the twist in the right wing.  That Victor is a tough reviewer.  Smile

BTW again. Rene is that wing like 22 1/2 inches?  Seems I have read that it's 24?

Yup the wing measures 22 1/2” edge to edge. the center is 11 1/4 “ and there is 1 1/4” dihedral measured with one side pressed flat to the table.
