I "hang" on here more often than most and I've never seen any mention of a McCoy .049. I know that they exist because I once had one including the diesel version.

Ok, thanks. Hopefully he'll see this post, however there's not much info on it. It's based on the .049 "poppet-valve" engine Dick McCoy designed in 1955 for Duro-Matic, redesigned in 1959 with a radial backplate mount and if you look at the photos its apparent the exhaust ports had been also been changed at least. This was the last .049 for Dura-Matic and was never advertised. Apparently even the operation instructions that came with the engine had pictures of the '55 version.

1959 McCoy .049 Empty McCoy .049 info

Post  49er Wed Oct 19, 2011 11:07 pm

Thanks guys for the info and the pics of the baby McCoy. I inadvertently deleted my post. The only information I had about the engine is from the American Model Engine Encyclopedia. It's difficult to find any info at all about this engine. Very Happy

I'd guess because it's more of a variation of an existing model then a new model, there's at least a couple test reviews and write-ups on the '55 version. That and by '59 (not '58) its was pretty much out-classed by the Thimble-Drome stuff!

I once had both the glow and diesel in the '55 version. The glow was good, but nothing to write home about. One of them, I think the glow, came with a stamped steel (Dural?) radial mount that you bolted the beam mounted engine too if your model required a radial mount.
The glow plug was a proprietary item that was retained by the cylinder fins (muff)...much like the NORVEL and AP Wasp.
When the glow head died, I abandoned the engine because my LHS's did not carry the plug. I don't even remember where it eventually went...I probably gave it away.
The only plane I remember having it in was a Consolidated WOWEE wing.

The mid-fifties were definitely the golden age of 1/2a, with Anderson, Atwood, Holland, Cox, O&R, O.K. Cub, Wen-Mac, K&B…and I’m probably missing one, all manufacturing engines. I think I’ve cataloged every one of them.
