Ok,

After much thought and suggestion from others I decided to completely re-think this.

The rules are now simpler.

1. Any Cox engine from .010 trough .15

2. Same engine must be flown for for the duration of the event.

3. Any airframe may be used and does not have to remain the same for the duration of the event. Just the engine!

4. Runtime begins on liftoff/release and ends when engine quits.

5. The most accumulated flying hours in 365 days starting 1 Jun 2013 wins the event.

That's it! I will be taking flying hour totals on a monthly basis and compiling them on my spreadsheet. Monthly totals for each entrant will be posted here. Hour/minute totals are due the beginning of each month. All forms of flying welcome R/C, CL, FF etc.

Let's have some fun! The more entrants the better as the purpose of this event is to raise Cox awareness and support our suppliers.

Ron

I assume RC is included? Is this logged flight time per person or engine?

Yep, see above. It's in there I just didn't give it as much attention. RC will be recorded in hours and minutes. Your Texaco slow flier would be a shoe in.

I guess I didn't fully answer your question. Flight time per engine per person. Airframe may not last the duration

So if you wanted to have your whole family enter an engine that's fine.

Perhaps I should mention the purpose of this event. It's simple, Cox awareness! Think of it this way if I get 50 folks flying Cox engines on a regular basis just think of how many more people you will touch throughout 365 days of flying!

You may rekindle a spark and we could flood the hobby once again. It would help Matt, Bernie and other suppliers and perhaps invigorate the youth again. It's a long shot, but hey do you want to just let things fade away or go down swinging!

Grab a cheap Babe Bee and strap in guys!!!

Sounds like fun. A handful of people were impressed with my Cub at the field.

The pros for me - I have a new RC engine I intend build a plane for, which will see many hours of use.

Cons - My flying field is 35 minutes away and there is not really anybody to take me out there.

Make a cheap CL plane. Just swap the engine back and forth. Then all you need is a 70' circle.

Or get your .010 up and running and build a Queen bee. You will only need a 40' circle.

Hmm. I don't know of any places close to fly CL either. I'll have to keep looking.

May be time to bust out some coreflute and hot glue. Very Happy

We'll see.

Not sure how safe things are in your area, but when I was your age it was nothing for me to put 40-50 miles on my bicycle in a day. Surely there are parks around. Do you know anyone that has a few acres? Just a thought. Be sure to run it by your parents though.

Count me in, will be using my red rat on the Réno if that's ok ... or is it just for specific engines ?. Out of interest just a thought, I run 35" lines does this still count as obviously my rotations per minute will be up on that of 45 or 50" lines no ? .
Will you put that into consideration ?

How about a quality measure rather than a quantity one? Logging hours is nothing without quality. Huh...
One could perhaps have a checklist with moves/tricks that have been performed? The list is then ticked off during the year with the goal of having mastered all of them?

For instance;
Take off from grass
Touch and go on grass
Inside loop
Outside loop
Bunt
Hammer head/stall turn
Cuban eight
Inverted flight (horizontal eight for instance)
Knife edge (straight and level is probably enough here)

There are more aerobatic tricks too, but these are not all that easy to do with just a cox engine for power (not including the larger engines by cox).

The only engine stipulation is it has to be a Cox. And the same engine needs to be used for the duration of the 365 days. Maintenance allowed of course.

A lap is a lap. Use whatever length lines you wish.

I like this idea, I think it would be best to keep it as a personal goal though as to not scare away any new fliers. I will develop one for Control Line. Good idea!

Can I count you in?

Yes, the list would be more for personal development, rather than a real competition. More about reaching a certain level of experience perhaps. Large circular loops are much harder to make then one thinks, for instance, and it also puts a higher demand on the airplane and engine.

How about grading the skills too, i.e. bronz, silver and gold flier, similar to what there is now for the number of posts made here?

I'm just thinking out loud here, but I would personally be more interest in working on a list of skills, rather than just getting a high number of hours in the air. It also suits my approach to the hobby better these days, it is all about getting some quality time with a hobby while juggling the other parts of life. Younger people might feel differently though...

Let us know when you click the stopwatch! Maybe there is an imbedded stopwatch application that will continuously run on a web page.

I'm in! I don't know which engine yet and I'll have to fix one up. I'm sure my boys will want a go at it also. Each person needs their own engine? Or one engine for the Johnson boys? Great idea BTW!

Duke,

Put as many engines in the air as possible. If all your boys wanna have a go then that's great!

Reminds me of an old OS-Max magazine ad about a guy in Japan with 12-16 engines on his RC plane.

I guess I should have asked, "should everyone have ther own engine?". Or "do I try to get as many people to fly my engine as I can and log total laps on this one engine in one year?" I'm a little slow I guess, just not sure if it's about the engine or the flyer or both.
Thanks

So let me see ...............

If I set up RTP in the garden, middle of the lawn should do, with 15ft lines.

Convert a cox engine to diesel (the proper way!), install an RC throttle, decent silencer and a nice large sturdy propeller. Sharpened aluminium!

Build a nice symmetrically winged stunt plane with as large a tank as possible and no undercarriage.

Install AS3X and a nice little giro to keep it flying level and steady. Oblivious to the wind!

Wireless output from sensors to count laps, record flying time and warn me when fuel is getting low.

Modify settings so that it can cut the grass once a week.

Then I would win both control line and RC at the same time!

It's about both really. Fly the same engine for an entire year as much as possible. You the pilot get the experience and the fun out of it.

If we had different pilots flying with the same engine then it wouldn't be fair for someone who can only fly alone.
