Happy A pleasant surprise

Well, after the amount of joy that I got out of cleaning up and running the throttled Medallion .049 I got on eBay earlier, I decided I wanted another one for a Papillon that I'm building (among all the other projects).  So I cruised eBay and found an auction for another one.  The picture didn't look that clear, but it seemed in okay shape.  So, for $35 I got it.  Seemed a good price.  Well, it got here today.  I know I need new glasses, but I didn't think I was totally clueless.  What I was expecting as a throttled Medallion .049 turned out to be a throttled Medallion .09! cheers

If anyone else was bidding on this also, I'm sorry to have beaten you out, but just know it'll go into a good model.  I'll post more pics after I disassemble and clean it up, but here it is as delivered:

Sorry, Duke. I'm on the other side of town from their field. I'd take me 45 minutes to get there in good traffic. Coming home at rush hour would take me almost 2 hours to get back. I asked just yesterday at the local hobby shop if there was any place local to me, but no dice. I'll have to stay R/C, though I do have an itch to build a nice C/L plane right about now.

Nice score! Especially for the price. I really like the throttled muffler as well.
Here is a pic of my Medallion .09. It has the throttled cylinder ring but it's still an excellent running little engine.
I enlarged a set of Match Stick plans for it. I have the fuse sides cut out and I had a friend cnc the wing ribs for me. I'm going to build the wing with quad flaps. Very Happy

I missed this reply, sorry.  Just FYI, the Fireball's are having a fun fly July 5th and Delta park and BBQ hot dogs. It's about an hour and a half for me, but it's a good group of guys.

I'll second the "Good catch" remarks.

I seldom look at muffled Cox engines, because I don't fly (or collect) R/C engines. That muffler on your Medallion looks like an aftermarket item, but I may be wrong about that?

Lately, I have been looking at Medallion .09 engines, because they are better suited for sport flying than the TD .09's I have.

I fight similar traffic going to Delta park in the afternoons, but coming home is seldom a problem, as the southbound traffic on I-5 seems to stop right after the I-405 south turn off that I take to get home.

Duke, if I make it to the fun fly in July I'll look you up. Saw you and your boys at a contest last year, but you were very busy flying carrier.

Duke and Bill, I'll try to make it to the fly-In. I emailed the Fireballs's Gmail account last night for more details and directions. I have a general idea of where it is, and I'm sure I've driven by it sometime when I took the wrong turn for the Expo Center, but off hand I can't think of exactly where it is.

Bill, looking at the articles in the "Reiews" thread, the articles on the throttled Medallions refers to it as a Cox throttle which could be purchased with the engines, so it must have been a Genuine Cox part.

Yes this throttle/muffler is a Cox product. They made them for the Medallion 15 also.

Well, I stand corrected! The only Cox mufflers I've seen are the rotating collar type, and the .074 Queen Bee muffler.
 
Check this site, and click on "3rd Party Parts", about a third of the way down the menu bar on the left side of the home page.

The Hiscott muffler is the one I was thinking about, but I've only seen pictures of them.
 
Dr. Martin Hepperle's site has a wealth of information on all variations and sizes of Cox engines, as does Warren Leadbeatters Wickipidia article on Cox engines.

Bill, I'll be at the Fun fly if my wife doesn't need me to drive her to the doctor's office Friday.  If I'm there, I'll be easy to recognize.  I'll be the one looking forlornly at all the planes, wishing there were a field on my side of town to fly C/L.
