Today’s Hobby Shop Visit
Seeing Bernie’s post about wanting .020 Tee Dees reminded me it was time to head back over to the local hobby shop. They’ve had a NIB Medallion .09 in a jewel case priced at $60 sitting in their engine case for 5 months now. I’m pretty much the only Cox guy in the area, so I have an idea of what it will sell for (i.e., what *I'll* pay for it). I offer $40 for it each month, but the owner never takes it. So, today I went back and made my usual offer. We compromised and he sold it to me for $45, and it came home with me.
When I started to pay him, he said “Wait a minute” and went in the back. He came out a couple of minutes later with a big Tupperware box of engines and some parts to look through. This is what I came home with:
I offered him $20 each for the TD on the engine pod and for the Medallion in the boat with the running gear. I was tempted to offer less, but he’s the only shop in the area that gets a steady trickle of old Cox stuff and I didn’t want to alienate him. Besides, he pretty much met my price on the Medallion .09 engine. The TD is gummed up and won’t turn, so it’ll come apart here soon. The Medallion in the boat turns, but has some resistance. I don’t know if it’s the engine gummed up, the grease in the drive shaft solidified, the knuckle joint binding, or most likely a combination of all three.
I offered $5 each for the -290 engine and the Golden Widow (Golden Bee front end, Black Widow back end). Both turn freely, but I’ll disassemble and clean them pretty good. Hmmm... While previewing this, I notice that the -290 has a left hand starter spring on it. I wonder what plane this was from?
And I also offered him $5 each for the McCoy .19 Redhead and the Fox .35 engines. They both turn freely, but both have gummed up needle valves that’ll need to be taken apart and flushed.
So, it was a reasonable day at the hobby shop.

So does this one. That's why this old stuff is just "old junk" they're happy to get $5 for.

VERY nice score! Especially the Medallions and the TeeDee. Congrats. The boat looks like fun too. I'll need to make some phone calls to my local shops next week, they used to stock Cox stuff but nowadays no "normal people" is interested in it so there may be a chance

Score!!! The engine in the boat needs to be raised and angled so the dumas brass coupler is straight or it will bind too much and trash the crankcase.

Nice haul!
My hobby shop receives a good deal of used engines but unfortunately he knows exactly what he has. That boat is cool, I need to make one of those for when my in laws get lawn irrigation. You should put that "golden widow" on your speed plane!

I like the Fox 35. It looks so clean it might actually need a full break-in.
