While many don't seem to able to cope with the smell of burnt model diesel fuel, I thought I'd bring back some childhood memories today and make use of a new (and first) batch of diesel fuel that I mixed up. I'm sure those with a diesel heritage such as Ian will appreciate it. Unfortunately, nothing I ran today was English, but I guess they smell the same. Personally, I've had far too many years of exposure to petrochemicals and I no longer have any sense of smell to speak of, so I couldn't really take advantage of my experiment as I'd thought. My son assured me that I stank when I walked in the house, so I suppose it worked.
First try was my Aurora (Kumar) K150 from India. Had trouble getting fuel through due to congealed castor but it eventually fired up. Unfortunately, the contra-piston didn't want to return once I'd screwed it down to the point of sagging and left the adjusting screw floating loosely. I couldn't get it to back off, so performance wasn't optimal. Next was my Taipan Tyro 1.9cc. That thing just runs sweet as a button with a beautiful mellow note. Finally, my Silver Swallow 1.5 got a run. This was difficult to fire up but eventually it decided it may as well keep going and rewarded my efforts. This engine has a far harsher bark than my other diesels- I'm not really sure why that would be because they all have open radial exhaust ports.
Anyway my science experiment seemed to work, so I guess I'll have to find a plane to try one on. I think I'll give my old Mills P75 a run next as it was the first engine that I learned to start & run on my own.
For Ian's sake, I also have a FROG 1.49 Vibramatic, so I may give that a run too, although the crank pin appears to be badly worn. We'll see!

Rod.

While running the engines the smell is not too bad, but the smell of the exhaust residues is something only a mother can love...

Nothing like automotive diesel. Model diesel is mainly kerosene and the scent is sweetened up with the Ether, as far as I remember from when I could actually smell things!!

Model diesel fuel is pretty good smelling...sorta like a WD40 oil lamp with castor added.

The smell of diesel fuel is addictive. It is not anywhere like automotive diesel fumes.

Before and after firing it is a wonder to behold. It is a perfume - the often black, oily residue left after running makes a perfect aftershave and the ladies can dab it behind their ears.

The burnt fuel has a lingering aroma, fresh fuel is soperific (and makes a nice anesthetic!).

Place fresh fuel on a cut and you will get instant dancing lessions until the stinging subsides.

The sound of a model Diesel engine is distinctive. It is often described as "barking" but each engine takes on its own note - they sing.

A group of them running together is like the "Three Tenors".

Not that I am biased and smitten with Diesel engines.

But no faffing with glowy things that don't glow, applying shimmy things, messing around with nitro %. Flick and fly!

I think that model Diesel fuel components should be quite easy to find in your area Eric. You might already have them if you have kerosene appliances, Castor-oil and ether. I believe those are the ingredients for a formula that will work. Ian or Ken can provide the mix ratio... There's threads here on the forum with formulations as well.

EDIT: I found this link in a thread here. Scroll down to Model Diesel Fuels.. there's a lot to know. http://modelenginenews.org/faq/fuels.html

Read through this thread Eric.. https://www.coxengineforum.com/t80-diesel-vs-nitro-in-cox-engines?highlight=diesel

An easy recipe to mix model diesel fuel is, one part kerosene, one part castor oil and one part ether........i.e. a 1/3 of each.........this is a general purpose mix and will run any model diesel.

We are lucky here that all ingredients are available, but if you have a problem getting ether then I have read that John Deer starting fluid should help you.
Invert the can, press the button to release the gas, and when all gone make two holes in the top to pour the ether out.
Ether will evaporate very quickly if kept in the open air,so best to keep any extra ether as well as your mixed fuel in a glass bottle with a metal screw on cap on tight.
