Happy little generator

i was planning on this for a long time
and i had the engine for it for a long time

and after seeing sombody do it bevore me
i am starting the project now

i am building a little diesel generator
a cox international diesel bombers (one of the firsth gens)
and a 48V motor (at 11000 rpm)

i am in the prosses of making the stand
the stand will hold the engine and a little fuel tank and the dynamo

the engine will be started with the dynamo (yea starter generator)
and when it all works i will make a electric regulator for it so that it opens and closes the chocktube to regulate the voltage

for now this is what i have and it is unwelded (for now)

Very nice. Glad to see someone actually getting their hands dirty and building one. I would try to find a cooling fan to mount on your flywheel, like the ones used in plastic Cox cars.

yea i thought to hell with it (and back)

and for the cooling i will make little slices in the flywheel to reduce weight and make a fan (90 degrees should do the trick)

my nephuw takes all the parts tomorrow for welding and drilling
and after that i need to find a tank that i can mount in the u profile so that it looks need

Yeah, years ago I wanted to do this with a can motor as a motor/generator. Just for the hell of it. But, it just went into my list of stuff to do and never got done.

Thats pretty cool! Have you ran it yet? I would of thought that motor might be a little big? So to start it, can you also wind flywheel backward?

I do like the idea of a small mini genset as a novelty....hey maybe we can have genset races!

sorrty mr mark but you have not read the topic

no i have not started it becaus it is not welded and i needs holes for the motor mounts
and also i am starting it with the dynamo witch is also the starter motor

The idea I had was to make it for a R/C submarine. Have a little snorkel mast to feed air to the engine, start the engine by applying a burst from the motor, and then use the motor as a generator to drive the subs' propeller. Can you tell I'm ex-Navy?

i had the same idea once for the submarine
but i was willing to mount little air cylinders in the sub so that it did not need a snorkle

i droped the idea becaus of the exhaust fumes

I did read it, but at no point did you say you did or didn't actually run it? I guess i was ASSuming you might have test ran it on a piece of wood or something, no biggie either way, i'm just glad to see somebody ACTUALLY doing something and learning something.

Lol, no my bad, that that's what i meant...i understood the metal frame was incomplete, but unsure if you tried running the engine attached to the motor? Anyways, now that we got that settled, good luck with your project!

I played with an idea to build a "steam-punk" flashlight around a babe bee Smile

The concept included a 6V motor used as a dynastart, a small 6V lead-acid battery and an old Honda motorcycle headlight with a 6V 15/15W bulb. The power for the glowplug would be provided by the battery via a regulator, and the battery would also be used to start the engine.

Being a steam punk piece, it would be more of a sculpture than a practical device, it could have manual functions and switches to change from start to charge and lighting modes and so on, maybe also some vintage look gauges vor volts and amps Smile And definitely a switch for the high and low beams on that old Honda headlight.

Well, I have a long "to do" list too, so someone else will probably do this before me, surely I am not the only one who has thought of this.

(2 rods of carbon that arc and produce light and heat)

my nephew was here today
he took all the parts and a spare engine (i dont want the bomber to be damaged)
he is gonna weld it and drill some holes

next week when it is back i will mount the tank and try to runn it

I like the idea (KariFS) of a storage battery.. or battery "pack". Wire-in a harness/Tamiya connector with a momentary switch for a 7.2V sub-C NiMh pack for "starting" the engine via the 540(?) motor/dynamo.. then switch-over to a "charge/run" setting; sending current to the voltage regulator and various stepped-down power-taps. (5V(USB), 6V, 12V etc.) I'm curious to know of the output-voltage that this little "gen-set" will produce; forward of a voltage-regulator, from the dieselized Cox .049 engine running with no amp-load at optimal rpm's.. and alternately with an amp-load.. that the engine can sustain.

I have a 12V "540" size motor in my homemade electric-starter for my Cox engines. There's plenty of power/rpm's to start a glow-engine.. but I'm not sure about a diesel-conversion. You'd need to be careful not to flood the engine.. or you could end up breaking a crank-pin. The higher rpm's of an elec. start should help to get a diesel firing though.. as compared to flipping or using a starter-spring. Just some food for thought.

Edited comment on output; no-load vs. amp-load.

the starting is easy
just a diode in line bit the starter battery
and when it fires up the diode goes into "blockade" and the starter battery shuts off

and for the flooding
i have not thought of somthing yet
but i know that i am not gonna force feed it fuel
(pumping it in the engine)
i may add a drop in the chocke tube but that would be all

Bout lost it on that one,did you ever read a book written in 69,about the U.S.S. Hallibut,Russia lost a sub in there territory ,U.S. sent the Hallibut to look for it,the guy that wrote it was in charge of the nuke power system,he changed the name of the sub to protect it,he called it U.S.S. Are you using a marine collet-style coupler between the flywheel and dynamo? That would be the easiest way to provide a good rigid connection. If you could find a brushed elec. motor with dual output-shafts, you might be able to use the opposite side as a power take-off. A siren would be cool.. but that's just the musician in me coming out. A siren would create sound-pitch in direct proportion to the exhaust note, regardless of rpm.
