Are new ones no longer available? I want some of their nylon props but all I see on their site are larger props starting around 7".
What are some other favorites among 1/2A users, besides the black Cox props?

Get the grey "Competition" 5x3 props from Bernie, you'll love 'em, plus they don't need a spacer like APC's

I've used those. I think they hold their pitch more firmly than the rubber duckies. A little brittle as I recall, but if I just don't hit the ground with them, they should do fine.

I've never been quite sure of choosing the right prop to match up with a combination of engine, airframe and application, so I'm doing the trial and error method, cutting the black 6x3 props down. With 4 different planes I'm trying to figure out which prop is best for each. I like the Top Flite 5.25x4 I used yesterday. But a 4 pitch is probably too much for stunts.

Watching your videos, your planes seem plenty fast and I think you have good line tension. As far as a 4" pitch, it could work, it's you're call what your happy with. I think the 5x3 would be fine, thats kinda been the standard perf. prop for decades, a 6x3 a little more pull, less speed. What that old saying: "pitch for speed, diameter for RPM?"

Grish yellow Tornado props are great.
I also like master airscrew and keil Kraft props (more flexible)

Top Flite 1/2A props Empty TF props

Post  Jaspur_x Tue Dec 06, 2011 2:24 am

TF mylons are still my favorite I have yet to break one, but I only have one 5.25x4, not fair at all!!! Mutliple planes, 1 prop, houston, we have bigtime problems here lol
I even have 1 old wooden 5.24 x 4 TF for old timers sake lol

But I wish I had a whole box of the nylon TF props, 6x3, 6x4, and 5.25x4

I just use the flexible cox props since I can`t have what I want, no other favorites so far.

I`m waiting to see what everyone else names off ,to get some and try them out lol

Does Master Airsrcew make 6" props? My LHS does not carry any gas props under 8". No

Yes.
5.5x4
5.5x4.5
6x3
6x3.5
6x4

Go to Tower Hobbies and search for Master Airscrew 1/2A. These all qualify for lower shipping rates.

As to 1/2A props I prefer wooden Tornado 6x3's of which I have a handful (which proved to disbelievers with a pic) or nylon Top Flites of which I have fewer. Cox nylons work well too for me.

My nylon props have spent most of their lives stored in an old cigar box out of exposure to UV rays from the sun. I haven't experienced any problem with smaller nylon props but with larger ones, yes. Too flexible under load conditions

Here's a photo I took sometimes back of some aftermarket, OEM props and a neat LH made by Dale Kirn.

Tornado makes a really flexible prop, in a white nylon that will not break.

If you can't find any Cox 'Competition' props, try Master Airscrew 6x3 or 5.5x4

I think the oddest prop I have is a old wood Topflite Power Prop 4.5"x6"

Post  RknRusty Tue Dec 06, 2011 2:04 pm

Hey I think I might have some used MA props I'd forgotten about. Bob(fit90) gave them to me, come to think of it, that's where my TF prop came from. I'll take another look and maybe cut some down to 5.5x3 and 5.25x3. maybe a 5.75x3 for the Jumpin' Bean. It stunts best with a 6 but I can hear it bog under a heavy load. That might make it happy. The Li'l Satan rockets around with any prop, but the smaller diameters seem like they open up the loops way too wide.

Thanks Dudes

Hmmm, I guess your LHS is my LHS. You know we have another one on Two Notch Road headed North on the left before Sandhills Village. I forgot the name, but I need to go out there. I bet they don't know what 1/2A is though.

About the propellers!

I don't think Top-Flite sells wood props smaller then 7x4 (I believe it is 7x4...) anymore.

Rev-Up propellers have been around for quite some time! You can still get new 6x3s here: HERE

The J.Z. Zinger Props seem to be good, you can get a 6x3: HERE

If you are not looking for wood props.

Here's a K&B 6x3 (smaller and larger sizes available too): HERE

Master Airscrew 5.5x4: HERE

Also check out:

Grish, they still have a few 1/2A size propellers left: HERE

I've never used Zinger 1/2a props, always tried to use Cox 'Grey' or Master Airscrews, if I didn't have any 'Greys'. My opinion on the Zinger props is that (larger .40 size+, and it looks the same on the smaller ones as well) is the leading and trailing edges are very squared and loose some efficiency to need to be reworked. For sport flying I'm sure there fine.

I love wood props on larger models, looks, safety, easy to balance, etc., but on smaller planes you're (at least I was) more prone to break a prop.
