hello, i got a peewee .020 engine from a hobby shop a couple of days ago, it was frozen and would'nt turn over smoothly. After 30 minutes of cleaning the engine and oiling it to get it to turn over, it finally worked, but now when i turn it over at the prop drive plate it makes a weird noise, it it kind of like a chirp. i have no idea what could be causing this noise to occur, what can i do to fix this? and, should i start the engine with it like this?
p.s i used "all purpose, 3 in 1 oil from wal-mart to lube up the frozen peewee. is it a good idea to use this to get a frozen engine to turn over?
also this is the first version of the peewee with the engraved words "thimble drome " on the integral gas tank. it was the cleanest on the inside that i have ever seen, the gaskets are in like brand new condition

3 in 1 oil will eventually glue your engine together in about 6 months of storage. I have switched to 2 cycle engine oil for a after run oil. So far no problems with it but time will tell.

As for the chirp the crank shaft may be dry yet inside. If the oil guide in the crankcase is filled with dried up castor it may take a while for the oil to seep in there. I always break down stuck Cox engines for this reason. I press the crank from the drive plate and remove the crank. Soak all the metal parts in denatured alcohol for an hour then brush clean. I use Q tips to clean the crankcase. Relube and then reassemble by pressing the drive plate back on the crank shaft.

The only other think that could be dry causing a squeak is the ball and socket in the piston.

so if its not a dry crankshaft, and it is the piston connecting rod, what do i need to get that fixed?

Take the backplate off and the tank. Hold the engine upside down and put a drop of oil on the ball socket. Work the engine back and forth to work the oil in.

It would be best to remove the cylinder and pull the piston out to do this. You can then check the ball socket clearence and reset it if necessary.

Do you have a set of 020 wrenches?

thats odd, i just took the backplate of and turned it over, its not making that noise

Then it is the reed making the noise that is in the end if the tank. Take the circlip off and carefully remove the reed. Sometimes a piece a dirt can get behind it and cause the reed not to seal against the face of the tank.

To test the reed seal I will take a piece of fuel tubing and put it on the back of the tank intake tube. I will then put the tube in my mouth and suck in and make sure the reed does not leak. If the reed make noise when doing this then it is leaking.

Me suspects the reed isn't sealing properly.

While it's apart, give the reed area a good squirt of fuel and reassemble.

I don't know how familiar you are with these engines, but you could remove the clip

and reed, and clean everything. Careful though, the reed is very fragile. Removing

the needle valve, soaking the backplate in the solvent or fuel of your choice, and blowing out

all the openings with compressed air might be a good idea also.
