New Project Empty New Project

Post  Ivanhoe Wed Feb 22, 2012 6:24 pm

Nothing to do with Cox engines, but I thought I'd share my latest project.
Ever since I came back into modelling a few years ago I have toyed with the idea of building another large stunt model, these were my main interest for most of my previous modelling life, and, having just finished the restoration of a nice McCoy 35, which I have found runs a very nice consistent 4-stroke when slightly rich (just what you need for stunt work) I have decided the time has come to start construction!
I pulled out the plans to various 60s models, and the choice has come down to a British design from 1959, which was powered by the same McCoy 35 back then...

New Project Coy_la10
Coy Lady 1959 54" wingspan, power .29 - .35

So, I've ordered a frightening amount of balsa, and once this arrives I shall start construction.
I must be mad!

This plane has really nice lines, both from the elliptical planform to the fuselage shape. Here are the plans offered as an encouragement to have Wilf post a build thread.

Post  Ivanhoe Thu Feb 23, 2012 4:02 am

Thanks for the good wishes, Folks, I think I'm going to need them!

The first thing I need to do is make-up a new building board, the one I have been using won't accomodate a 54" wing, and the crucial part of a stunter is that the wing is built dead true.
I would happily post a build thread, as long as no-one thinks I'm hijacking a Cox Forum for a model about as far from Cox engines as it's possible to get!
I'll need to re-learn a lot that I knew 50 years ago, (the last time I built and flew anything like this), such as building a 31/2" baffled fuel tank (THAT will be fun!) I don't think such a thing is made today, and even if it was, the cost would be fairly astronomic!

One good thing though, starting on this will mean that I have to tidy-up my workbench, which I have been putting off for months!

I asked about pics and a build thread from our King Administrator and he gave the green light. I wouldn't think there would be a problem with that. Maybe we need to have a "Balsa Bashers Builders Corner" section of the boards, just an idea.

I have a start to finish model build waiting for a lazy day posting, complete with pics and such.

I have been thinking up the section, just getting a few things done first.

Great idea! I assume that if I have already started my build thread you can transfer it to the new section?

New Project Empty Stunter

Post  dankar04 Thu Feb 23, 2012 1:36 pm

I have a Brodak Version of Palmer Smoothie. Engine will be a modified McCoy .40. I will use hi-castor fuel and about 10% nitro fuel. Best to you on project.

Nice model, Palmer's Thunderbird together with the Nobler were two other models I considered before settling on the Coy Lady The last stunter I built before giving up modelling all those years ago was the Thunderbird I intended to go with another this time, but I couldn't find a plan of the Veco kit version with inverted engine, only the upright or radial cowl ones, and I didn't feel like doing any redesigning!

Well, I got started! Waiting for the wood to arrive, so starting on other bits..

New Project Rib_te10

Got the ply templates cut for the wing ribs, 26 ribs, so 26 balsa blanks go between the templates for shaping, root and tip rib templates are to allow for the wing taper
Also made up the former to build the tank on, it will be made from .16mm brass sheet for ease of soldering, also waiting on the brass for that arriving, must get the fuel pipes annealed and bent to shape before it arrives, I shall probably mess a couple up in the process, one vent is quite a complicated shape in a "Palmer" tank design like this. Tank is 31/2" x 2" x 1" deep

You picked a nice one Wilf, it's a beaut!

Going to be an interesting build. I shall be watching intently.

Here are the other two stunters I considered........

Bob Palmer's Thunderbird

New Project Thunde10

and George Aldrich's Nobler

New Project George10

I'd built both of these back in the old days, so I decided on a different design with Coy Lady

New Project Empty Update

Post  Ivanhoe Tue Feb 28, 2012 10:35 am

I haven't got round to starting the actual build yet, due to other commitments, but I have been working on the hardware so that I have it all to hand when I DO start.

New Project Hardwa10

I've fabricated the tank, not the neatest soldering job I've ever done, but it won't be seen anyway! Also got the flap and elevator horns made up, bent the undercarriage wire to shape, made up the castoring tailwheel, and, most important of all, painted the pilot!

More to come

It's Coy Lady designed in 1959 by Ron Brown (UK) 54" span for a McCoy .35
As I wrote earlier, I hesitated to post a build thread in case anyone accused me of hijacking the Cox Engine forum with a model about as far away from a Cox powered model as it was possible to get!, but there seems a fair amount of interest, and I was encouraged to go ahead anyway!
