For the first time ever, the Open Speed podium finishers at the 2014 Tournament of the Milenium in Santarem Portugal all used 1/2A's.
Inasmuch as some Europeans there had memories of Cox engines being obstinate, all the Cox 049's ran flawlessly with
instant starts nearly every time (only one over primed attempt took 2 starts of the spring). They made the 1/2A diesels  look....well just
not very friendly when being started by hand!  Official Results have not been posted yet & so scores are from memory.

1st: Paul Gibeault:  Modified "Kirn Torky" powered by a much modified Shuriken .049 ABC.  Profile Proto speed class ~101 mph
2nd Julio Isidro:  Streaker powered by a Gibeault tuned Cox Venom .049. Profile Proto speed class ~ 70 mph
3rd Dianne Gibeault:  Streaker powered by a Gibeault tuned Cox Venom .049. Profile Proto speed class ~ 67mph

The event coordinator Julio Isidro hosted a wonderful gala awards & prize giving dinner afterwards featuring fine Portuguese cuisine.
It was a great event to kick off our vacation afterwards!

Hi Ron,

I even have a video of the winning flight that my wife took. But, I don'y know how to post a video. Seems to be too big of a file... Sad
I had been hoping to do a build article of the model, as I took photos during of all steps of construction.....then the computer died!  ARG!
My mods were:
Cut down wing & stab to minimum area. Use sealed elevator hinge.
Cut down fuse & use T-tail layout
Cut off rudder & fairing.
Replace top rudder with small carbon sub rudder.
Replace large heavy L.G. with small lightweight (removable) L.G.
Move wing forward touching the much heavier Shuriken motor.
Replace metal tank with lightweight bladder tank system.
Overall weight now is 5.25 oz
Performance was 96 mph in Napa this year & 100 mph w/ improved carbon prop.

p.s. I do rather like the small models when transporting them overseas. Large model boxes are becoming too difficult/expensive for airline travel I find.

Paul is that clamp ring on the Shuriken drilled out for what looks like a Merlin style Glo Bee? It also looks like the anodizing is missing inside the venturi. Has that been opened up as well? I just got some new Boca style bearings in miy engine. I recall what you mean about them not being the same as stock. I finally after waiting for what seems forever received a spraybar that actually fits the engine. Ken

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the kind words. The 1" spinner you see is one supplied with my Shuriken, so unfortunately I don't know where you can find them.
I don't currently have a Youtube account. This file is over 20 MB & my email server says no files over 5MB each can be sent nor a total of more than 20 MB.
So how can I send it??

Hmmm,

Well, that's a big file. I am pretty computer illiterate unless it's a simple thing. Maybe there is some way to compress the file? Maybe some PC wiz will chime in.

You really should consider a Youtube acct though, you do some pretty amazing stuff and it's a shame it can't be shared.

Your pictures and writeups have caused me mess around with speed. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. Think of the new interest you could conjur up if you had video to share.

Speed flying sounded boring until I saw it first hand.

Zip it into volumes should work. I remember when 1.44mb was the biggest that could be transported easily...double sided floppy disks were all the rage once.

PKzip used to do this, there is still a free windows version (I remember the command line version). Been years since I needed this functionality, so I might be not helpful on this. I have not reviewed the current version, or any other version recently.

500 MB is nothing on Youtube - agreed should start a account so they will host your files for you plus would be a shame not to have these to share and inspire.
Your mail account is like mine only good for 5meg. Another trick is to play the video on your monitor or flat screen tv get up close with a cell phone and only record the juicy bit with sound - the file will be dramatically smaller as a cell phone file is more compressed. You will learn 5 MB is good for about 15-30sec per MB depending on the phones quality preset user prefs.

The Tee Dee I got from you last year is hauling my combat trainer with great consistency and easy starts. One of my best Cox engines

My apologies Ken, apparently my first (long!) reply disappeared into cyberspace & I hate that! SOoo here's a second try (with feeling!)

Very observant. I reamed out my Shuriken head clamp ring to fit Norvel Spirallite glow plugs. I have not yet tried Merlins. The advantage of the Norvel plug is that it is definitely faster than my own head with it's long lasting Novarossi tapered seat plug. The disadvantage is that's it's a "plug a run" at 32,000+ RPM. It would worry me more if I flew more than my usual 3-6 flights per year (one contest)...
Yes, I did bore out my venturi to .195" I.D.  I was surprised to see no RPM increase on the bench past .165" I.D. but at least it doesn't appear to slow it down...
The missing anodizing on the head was from a severe crash at the '99 AMA Nats. My inverted (w/ Cox pan) Class II hit the pavement at ~110 MPH causing the entire nose section to shear off & flung into a field just off the paved area. I was lucky to have a dozen or so helpful guys form a CSI conga line as we swept the field. After 5 minutes I found the missing engine/nose section. To it's credit, after a clean up the Shuriken ran for another year before it's damaged bearing finally gave out. I had to buy ~ 10 Boca rear bearings before I found one that had the suitable internal clearance. They will all run, but noticeably run slow which as you know is not the name of the game in speed flying. MY #2 engine is a full 2,000 RPM off my #1 engine (with the poorer fit bearings). Such an engine has ENORMOUS POTENTIAL I think, but potential is all it will be... with no factory support.

I have one Shuriken ready to go for combat. Certainly heavy, but the engine is recessed into the leading edge. APC 4.6x3 and 40% nitro should keep things happy. My engine has a boat load of head shims. I certainly need to get rid of most of them and I have no idea why so many were in there. I would love to have a Nelson head to screw in there. Ken

Hi Ron & thanks for the kind words! YES, after listening to the 'usual' diesels, this engines extream RPM's raised a lot of eyebrows. The NEATEST thing about this engine, is that I've achieved a state of tune where it will run all day long like that , flight after flight with no overheating. It's made me a 'BELIEVER'!!

I remember reading that small speed planes used single blade props with a counterbalance for better efficiency.

Has this trend come and gone?

Jim:  

No, single blade props are still "The Standard" in International class 2.5 cc speed. Their use in 1/2A Proto however has dropped off for some reason. I think the main reason is the number of proto fliers has dropped off a lot too. Single blade design & construction requires a lot of knowledge & more work to mold. Presently, most all competitive proto fliers buy props already made & so single blade development has essentially stagnated.
Steve Wilk ( eliminatorprops.com ) produces 8 different single blade props for 1/2A Speed but none are listed for proto use. Perhaps one could be adapted, but that would take work...

Paul. is fuel contest supplied? In addition are you limited to a certain amount of nitro? I know Formula .40 and others have gone to the 10% limitation. I was just wondering if that carries over into 1/2A events. My Shuriken really doesn't start waking up unless you give it a good dose of vitamin N. Ken

Hi Ken,
Actually the organizer provides a fueling station of all fuel components allowing contestants to make their own fuel with. So you can make whatever you want & not worry about it. At present, my best flights so far on 10% fuel are 96 & 97 MPH. This year I used a previously un-tried prop. Unfortunately (due to poor record keeping), I wasn't able to see if my 100+ MPH flight was backed up or not or a possible timing error (I didn't get the other flights on video).
AGREED, Shurikens are built to run on unlimited Nitro & certainly respond accordingly.
