We came across this engine the other day:

http://coxengines.ca/cox-140-chainsaw-engine-very-rare.html?&cat=0&page=

Although we had seen some used ones over time, had never seen a new one for sale. Interesting beast and came in OEM packaging, together with the original instruction manual.

Now, that will power one heck of a big control line airplane lol!

It almost looks like it was marketed....as a engine? Not as a replacement for chainsaw engine or Bronco bike engine, would be interesting to see more photos of the included info...

This was one way that Cox sold the engine, although they did also sell the engine in conjunction with a chainsaw.

Yes, it was marketed as an engine that could be used in various applications, such as aviation, boats, chainsaws, bicycles, etc..... interesting piece for sure. Some modelers converted it to a rockin' gas-powered airplane engine Smile

Let me know what pictures you would like.

photos of the info, just so we can read more about it. I've never seen one of these and got to think its a rare piece, especially NIB.

In the 70's or 80's there was a company (or two) that reworked these for 1/4 scale R/C, from what i remember reading they weren't too bad a engine.

Found this, was sold thru Hobby Lobby: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/engine-conversions-92/10060072-cox-140-gas-engine.html

Yeah, first new one we ever came across and it was an incredible bargain, seeing that Venoms are going for $400+ these days.

Funny with the O&R as, with the Cox engine, we also received two O&R brochures, probably an oversight of the seller.

To address Mark's request, here is a link to the manual:

I have one of the chainsaw engines in a box somewhere around here.  I was thinking I'd put a prop adapter on it and build a giant Q-Tee to put it in.  Unfortunately, I'm not a machinist, and the few places online that sell parts for converting gas engines only deal with Ryobis, Homelites, and such.  Nothing that would work with the Cox 140.

I did see a guy selling a Rhino 140 last year, but he wanted way too much for an engine that didn't look in very good condition.  Besides, can you imagine how much Cox Superfuel a 1.4 c.i. glow engine would suck down on a 10 minute flight?

There's a few other documents pertaining to these gas engine here: https://www.coxengineforum.com/h24-instruction-sheets#gas_engines_equip

Say Bernie, are there any other documents with your engine that are not listed here?

Just an FYI, be careful using unleaded fuel if you ever run one of these engines. If you live near an airport.. you might be able to buy low-lead/high-octane fuel. It's expensive.. but is blended more like the fuel was back when that engine was made. The current fuel with ethanol is blended to run leaner.. so the jets in a vintage carb will need attention. Even though it's a 2-stroke; running it on unleaded/ethanol-based fuel may require the use of a fuel additive.. but again; be careful when mixing fuel. Additives can alter the fuel/oil ratio.

Bernie, the Rhino 1.4 engines were Cox 140 engines fitted with a glow plug adapter and a pumper carb for glow fuel. If you look at the pictures in Mark's link above, you can see the adapter. I've never talked to anyone who ran one to see how they performed compared to a purpose designed glow engine in the higher displacements. But I tend to think that the performance probably wasn't all that great.

Cox 140 Beaver Empty Cox 140 carburetor

Post  BlackWidow Mon Jul 26, 2021 4:38 pm

I know that parts for the Cox 140 pumper carburetor are basically UNOBTAINIUM!
However, all I need is a carburetor diaphragm.
I am POSITIVE this diaphragm is shared with many other small engine carburetors out there... I just don't which one?
If they were sold by their dimensions, I would be good to go, but all the carburetor parts purveyors want the carburetor s/n or model number.
Anyone have any ideas??

Are you sure it has no numbers or letters on it ? In the instruction manuals to the Lf. here > https://2e76ee21-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/freefilesdownloads/Cox%20140%20Parts%20Manual.pdf?attachauth=ANoY7coDq_6_8VC2rGTgd1WnbpAZz-_hBDgiZVjecW93VKhh2k2bjz9QqR9c3exy3v3QqFcgeWp1Oi10gN7-myZvcfofWMelSivIjfxGaaigJBiKQEAtzDXwjvTKpZjeC1Ni4LEkbfz7NRgN0eYa8lvAGs8Lvf-1_8IZS-TAdK7ycCDP74en0pkLPFx6CSVYvbthKqIM9fdxGgLM7Pgs2kedwu_ylQQ17oy_UKpQVdOgYy1wFdYBTUc%3D&attredirects=0   it looks like a Tillotson , but i don't see it listed in the 1970 cross sheet >> https://tillotson.ie/market/vintage/ Call them .. If all else fells i would seek out a repair shop that does 2 cyl. and usually the Mech. keeps extra diaphragms and such . Small Cox Logo

THANKS for the links and references!
I cannot see ANY numbering of any kind on the stock Cox "Rhino" carburetor.
Interesting that when I searched for Tillotson carburetor parts, Husqvarna popped up?
Why interesting? Huh...
Yesterday, I searched through literally hundreds of pictures online of various small carburetor diaphragms shown against a grid background, where each grid was ONE INCH.
I found what looks like a virtual carbon copy of the old diaphragm I had removed from the original 'Cox' carburetor.... guess what... it says it is for a Husqvarna carburetor.
So, I think I am on the right track. Smile
Fairly expensive compared to all the standard "Walbro" type diaphragms, but I ordered it and keeping my fingers crossed it FITS.
If it does, I will post the part info here!

I doubt these diaphragms last very long when the engine is run on methanol Crying or Very sad
