Awoke to snow this morning.

Part of the "Grab bag" bundle.

Before coffee, walked over to the garage and short boiled the Bug engine and a Gilbert 11, both not to nasty hence the 3 hour boil.  Neither came out as clean as I'm used to but further scrubbing in Simple Green and an alcohol rinse on the Cox helped.  The Gilbert will have to be dunked again or disassembled and a mild media blast.  Best part on the Cox is that the pull starter works fine.  I remember destroying the one on our original  Baja Bug years ago.

The usual age related corrosion on the fuel tank.  Didn't Mark Boesen chuck one of these up in a drill press and polish it out?

How many here make these engines with drives part of your collections?

ARRRRH! Snow!   We have been snow free for a couple of weeks, all the snow and ice dams on the roof have melted. weatherman says we gonna get some b4 the end of this week! Getting spoiled enjoying this "global warming"

I do have a pull start engine in my collection. Just thought it was cool. Had imagined putting it in a small to medium sized boat, take the gear off and install a shaft drive. I bought plans for Dumas "short stuff" so it's in the que.

Nice looking engines, rsv1cox. Quick question: did you boil the Cox with the pull start attached? I picked up a Cox Jeep and I freed the engine up with after run oil but would like to give it a hot antifreeze bath to clean it up(pretty nasty, think it was stored outside in a storage shed) but don't want to ruin the pull start. Thanks!

Well, at least I do Smile Here's a thread from a few months ago about the clean-up of my car engine:

https://www.coxengineforum.com/t10059-mystery-motor-from-an-unknown-vehicle

I assembled this engine with the needle and the cooling element pointing towards a different direction compared to the original arrangement so that it is easier and more compact to store.

I remember that thread Kari, nice clean up on a colorful engine. Mine made it onto my "Enya tree" presently the only non-Enya to do so.  Placed it beside an Enya .09 Car/Helo engine.

And watertrucker, no, I didn't remove the starter mechanism.  It didn't look as nasty as the others I had taken apart and frankly I didn't want to deal with those little pauls on the eccentric.  I just removed the glow head and loosened the case screws and boiled it like that.  I didn't try to pull the starter prior to boiling.  But after the boil I removed the case, immersed it in full strength Simple Green then pulled the starter, then into hot water rinse again operating the starter, blew out with compressed air, then into clean 91% alcohol pulling the starter, more compressed air then a liberal spray of RemOil in all openings.  Smooth as silk now, but the exterior needs some polish.

I have this one coming for Lieven and will ship it as soon as it arrives.

He should have fun cleaning it up.  I just hope the starter mechanism works.

Snow gone this morning Eric and maybe 50 degrees today.  We sit at about 1400 feet above sea level and temps go down as elevation goes up. Sad This Florida boy is used to 25' ASL.

I will try the Hoppees and try to clean that case up, the rest of it looks pretty good.

Bob.

The pull starter is a very simple mechanism. 2 small steel discs are under the gray worm drive gear. These have a tendency to get stuck and need freeing up. Cox would put a sticker on the chassis indicating to pour fuel into the starter mechanism. A larger problem is the 90 deg bend on the spring steel recoil spring. If it breaks off, it's very difficult to re bend it without breaking. That's usually the fate of the starter and your in need of another.

Darned if these car engines don't multiply.

Seems that during the night Mrs. Enya and Mr. Cox got together and brought forth these hybrid twins, one with a birthmark. Smile
