The Fokker D21 is the aircraft that kept the skies of Finland (mostly) clear of Soviets during the Winter War. In 1935 seven Fokkers were ordered from the manufacturer along with a licence to manufacture them. The type was rather suitable for Finland, as the fuselage is of chrome-moly tube construction and the wing is made of wood (original design was spruce but pine was used in Finland). Finland did not have much aluminium resources. There were numerous experiments and modifications done, such as ski landing gear, retractable gear, different engines (as availability of the original Bristol Mercury engines became NLA for Finland), Oerlikon 20mm cannons in the wings and more.

When the war broke out, the Finnish Air Force had about 30 of these operational, and about ten Bristol biplanes. The Fokkers shot down 151 enemy aircaft during the winter war, own losses were 10 planes and 6 pilots. One of the more famous pilots and incidents is the battle where Lt. Jorma Sarvanto shot down six Ilyushin DB-3's in four minutes. The seventh was only damaged as Lt. Sarvanto ran out of ammo, but was shot down by another pilot above the Gulf of Finland. Many times the enemy bombers just dumped their bombs and turned around when they spotted the Fokkers.

During the Continuation War Fokkers were outdated and used mostly for reconnaisance missions and patrolling the "not so busy" parts of the front, yet they managed to down 60 enemies.

According to Wikipedia, a total of 145 Fokker D21's were built, 97 of them fought in Finland, so, in addition to Brewster Buffalo, the Fokker is one of those lesser known aircraft that had not a great significance in the world scale but were in a huge role in Finland. There is one genuine Finnish Fokker D21 left, located in the Air Force museum in Tikkakoski, Finland. Note the ski landing gear.

That's a great piece of history on both Finland and the Fokker D-XXI Kari! Thanks for sharing. I have a few other images in my archives. As I mentioned to Joe (akjgardner); I Liked the styling. Handsome and rugged. Oh.. and I tend to like most airplanes with round engines..
