A friend bought this engine, I would say without use or with just one startup, unfortunately there were three units of glow plug, but all burned. I wonder if I could do something with your engine and decided to try to put a glow plug in the engine cylinder cover (ex glow plug original), I have no way to compare the result with an original glow plug, but I noticed that it runs very well .
Someone has experience with this engine and can you tell me what the performance of it?
Thank you.

Mauricio,

Mecoa of USA seems to have K&B glow heads on stock:http://www.mecoa.com/acc/glowplug/glowplug.htm

Good luck, András.

The K&B 049 engines are evaluated here.

1.Stallion: http://www.sceptreflight.com/Model%20Engine%20Tests/K&B%20Stallion%20.049.html
2. Tornado: http://www.sceptreflight.com/Model%20Engine%20Tests/K&B%20Tornado%20.049.html

I believe a 6x4 may over-prop this engine, I would put that prop rather on a TD049 that is more powerful, if not on an even larger engine.

In my humble opinion - as described in my other post, "Standard glow plugs..." today - the standard glow plug conversion reduces the power of small engines, so you may want to buy a genuine K&B glow head from Mecoa for the original engine power restoration.

Mauricio.
This engine will benefit greatly from using Nitro. You mentioned only mixing Methanol & Castor oil. They should use the same type of fuel as a Cox engine.
Also, while the fuel tank is from an .049 engine the red back plate is from an .060. Be very careful with the reed valve if you take the engine apart. They are very unusual and difficult to replace if damaged. I can remember that there was a previous discussion about swapping the head off another engine. It may have been a WenMac/Testors head.

The red/white tank is correct, toward the end of production K&B had more red backplates and used them up.

Neat video, the early versions had a really flimsy, thin plastic reed, while the later ones were more like Cox reedies, i'm guessing this was the later.

Friend András, thank you for this great contribution, I am going to give this information to my friend, to see if you want to take care of these original glow plug. My friend is already happy to see this engine running, since it was a bit sad to check that the glow plug that came to the engine were burned. It really is a beautiful engine, easy to start and very good gear, I will share with you photos if my friend installs it in some model.
A big hug for you! Smile

Hi Rod, thank you very much for the information, it will be interesting to prepare mix with nitro and surely the engine will generate a few more laps.
At this time its maximum was 11850/11880 rpm, bearing in mind that the fuel has no nitro and the glow plug is not original.
I am going to recommend to my friend to be very careful if you disarm the engine, precisely because of the recommendation you give me regarding how delicate it is and difficult to find the flap valve.
Thank you very much! Thumbs Up

Hi, how's it going? So as not to disassemble the engine again, I made this drawing to represent the shape of the valve that this motor has, it's made of copper. Gracias por su información!

Darn, I hate it when I hit "SEND" and my post just vanishes Mad

Anyway, the reed pictured is the same as mine.  Originally it seemed like the reed was molded/clamped into the alloy ring.  I can't confirm that, but mine was badly deteriorated.  It was suggested (possibly by Mark) to use heavy vinyl sheet to make a new one.  I managed to cut one out but I doubt that it will work.  I'm yet to run it, but the old "suck/blow" test was a big fail Sad
Anyone know an alternative solution?

i'd imagine it would be like making a reed for a Cox only more difficult as you'd have to use a similar material and the opening in the middle would have to be pretty exact. The reed fits under the ring, then the clip.

It is a very interesting design, I am not sure when K&B sold their engines with it included, but also shows how perfectly simple hit the star-berillium reed and its circlip housing in comparison in the COX design, dating back to the late 50-s, were, that outlived many decades.

Before these engines K&B had the "Sky Fury" in various sizes as a single cylinder and an inline two cylinder. I had an inline twin that if I remember correctly was a .15 (two .074's). K&B also had those for boats as inboard or outboard. Anyone remember them?

I would cut a oval reed from .005 mylar (cheap book binders have these) that will fit inside the clamp ring LOOSELY and snap it on and see if that will seal by testing , or if you have a .049 cox mylar cut to fit , since they replaced the star with the oval without a problem it should work in my opinion . Eric.
If you notice Mark's top picture, the reed does not sit over a single central hole like a Cox. It has to seal the series of holes and the central hole of the reed seals on a small conical bump in the alloy reed seat. (Best I can describe it). So the outer edge needs to seal right around for it to work. A copper or even mylar reed would be too inflexible, that's why it was suggested to make it out of flexible clear vinyl sheet, as shown in the third picture. I have cut a nice neat one which looks ok, but as I said, due to the failed suck/blow test I haven't tried to run the engine.

Engine K&B 0.049 Empty K&B Allyn engines

Post  706jim Sun May 07, 2017 7:21 pm

I own the 0.099 twin aero engine and the 0.12 twin outboard. I ran the outboard only once as it was tricky to start with the flywheel so far above the mounting bracket. When I test ran the aero twin I figured I had a real powerhouse on my hands until I realized later that the exhaust note was an octave higher than a single due to the alternate firing arrangement. I used that engine on a twin rotor control line autogyro that I was given back in 1971, but don't recall that it ever got airborne.
It's hard to say how long these engines would last with the poorly supported aft cylinder running in a short aluminum main bearing.
Does anybody know?
