Re: What on earth is this engine???
Looks like a Drone diesel.
I don't know much about them personally, but there's a good read here: http://modelenginenews.org/ad/drone.html

Re: What on earth is this engine???
Yes, it is a first version Drone diesel from 1947. Designed by Leon Shulman, a very successful prewar free flight designer and competitor (BANSHEE, ZOMBIE,...), an A26 pilot in WWII, the Drone designer, click designer and competitor, and a mfgs rep for years.
The Drone was a very good engine, but the glow plug that came out in late 1947 sealed it's fate.

Re: What on earth is this engine???
I converted my Drone .29 to glow and I fly it. A very neat engine. I really want to take it inverted but I don't think it's going to work. The Drone was sold with no warranty, it was guaranteed to run out of the box. They like to shake a bit. I have used them both in diesel and glow. Aerodyne made a variable adjustable head and they work quite well unlike the fixed head. You used different weight oils to compensate for weather. I have started them in the very very cold. This is a real task to keep your patience.
