What if you rotate the Goldberg mount 90 degrees?

Two of the holes on a horseshoe fit the cast backplate mounts, since the brodak mount for profile fuselages has 6 holes and fits both a horseshoe and cast backplates.

Mount was mainly for CL, although you could use it for free flight or RC. You mount the adapter with the needle valve going horizontal, i.e., needle valve on the left. Nipple will be on the right side, same side that the fuel line goes to the tank. In this configuration, the mount then matches the Cox .049 tank engine mounting bolt pattern.

Carl Goldberg came up with this mount, when he recognized that the drawback to the postage stamp 190 / 290 engines that came with Cox plastic RTF planes, were lacking a way to mount to a kit airframe, when it became a donor engine. Most engines were reusable except for the lack of a mount. With this mount it became a usable engine. I bought several 30 or 40 years ago, still have 2.

Just saw someone on E-Bay selling 2 NOS ones in original packaging; however they are rather pricey at $19 each (with shipping) for what used to be a couple buck item. For $19 each, if it were me, being the lesser of a determined collector, I'd just buy a horseshoe mount or salvage one off a Sure Start, remove the postage stamp mount and put it to good use.

BTW, I remember an article back in the late 1960's ~ early 1970's where the writer boasted of the decent power produced by the postage stamp engine, suitable for entry level CL racing. I'd have to pull my engine apart, but I'm guessing that the cylinder had dual bypass ports like the Golden Bee, possibly not too far off in power to a Black Widow.

In the magazine article, the writer trimmed the postage stamp plastic back flange flat, installed two pieces of sheet metal bent each in a "Z" using engine back screws to hold the mounts in position, and 2 wood screws each top and bottom to mount to the fuselage firewall. Needle valve was oriented to the side.

There's more than one way to skin a cat (fish).

You're welcome, Kim and Marleysky. I vaguely remember that Dale Kirn article, thanks for sharing. I found the plan and article on Outerzone, downloaded them. Also I vaguely remember another article with similar set up that came later, may be 1969. It was a profile fuselage with 290 engine and a one wheel main landing gear.

You're welcome, Eric. This Christmas I tried to be on the nice instead of the naughty list, so Santa would be good to me.

Weatherwise it's been a weird year here in New Mexico. Normally, Clovis on the Eastern border to Texas Panhandle gets 4 or 5 snows worth a couple inches each give or take. This year we had zero snow, hardly any rain. We've been under fire hazard conditions due to the dryness for a long time.

We are now in the April winds bring tumbleweeds and dust phase.

I would gladly buy the Goldberg mount for my favorit reedie the red postage stamp backplate 190, but it seems to be unobtainium on ebay.

I have two, that is exactly 3 less than the number of the 5 pcs of 190-s that I would like to furnish all with the mount.

I am thinking if it could be re-made by 3d printing like the 020 backplate made by Jason_WI?
