Sounds a little like my Golden Bee Wilf a dab of Hermatite on the o ring between tank and back plate
worked for me. Might've been better to put a new o ring in but Hey you understand hammers...!

I always replace that O-ring as a matter of course with any new (used) engine I get, together with all the other gaskets, and if I don't have a spare a bit of silicone fuel tube works just as well

I prefer the silicone fuel tube to the Cox o-gasket. I think the silicone tube makes a tighter seal as long as you don't cut it too thick. About 1mm but it's not critical.
