Re: Need help identifying diesel engine
While I am of no big help in identifying the engine in question, by looking at the design and numbers you show, I would venture to guess that the numbers are a manufacturing date. 11.57 leading me to believe made in November of 1957. So possibly searching for 1957 diesel model engines may bring something up.

Re: Need help identifying diesel engine
At first glance - the engine looks as if it was machined from bar stock which is usually an indication that it is home made.
However. this one has remarkable similarities to the 1947 Speed Demon diesel made at Long Island, New York.

Wow, seems to be quite unusual. http://www.modelenginenews.org/cardfile/speedDemon.html

Re: Need help identifying diesel engine
Thank you all so very much that info helps a ton and I would like to believe this is a speed demon engine. It does very much resemble one almost to the tee. I have read about it on Adrian Duncan's review and that info along with the model engine news review helps solidify my confidence. I think I got a bit lucky scoring the relic of an engine and it will make a strong addition to my collection. Again thanks all for the help I couldn't have figured it out on my own.

Yes, it sure does look like the Speed Demon linked to above. If so, my guess of the numbers being a date are not correct either then.

Well, the one in the link has the number 1255. The MEN review states date unknown, so I'm supporting the date theory.

Re: Need help identifying diesel engine
I will not oppose any theory or opinion by any means since all stated in this post are valid (based on information from MEN and other forums). Even if the 4 digit number on the back of the engine was in fact a date of manufacture I'd still be pleased the engine is as close to the speed demon as it sits now. I have always loved the model diesel engines made way back when that still live in this day and age. It will live in my display case for many many more years and live a happy "uncertain origin" life .
