The Gambler Mark

A couple of precious Gilbert heads in there Mark. If they're off the .074 and still work that's not a bad bonus.

(Whoops. Hope I didn't just push the price up Shh ).

I saw the Gilbert heads and wrench, but I'm good on heads if they're for the .11 engines.  The thing that made me go for it is the Testors heads.  I could always use a couple more Testors heads that work.  I also have a use for a PeeWee backplate. Looking closely at the pictures, the PeeWee tanks have had holes drilled in the sides, so I'm not sure what I'd do with those.  The fact that the backplates are missing the needle valves I can work with. Not quite sure how he ended up with four crank cases with only one crankshaft.  I'll have to keep my eye out for loose crankshafts.

I'm curious about the 2-bolt backplate on the right.  Wasp? OK Cub X?
I wonder what it is?

Just noticed, the smaller size of the Gilbert heads compared to the wrench just about confirms Gilbert 7

Mark,
Any chance you are also the "Opportunistic Mark?

I have a Gilbert .11. Maybe you could take advantage of an opportunity to sell the Gilbert heads and wrench...make me an offer I can't refuse.

No plane planned for the Gilbert, so no rush on your opportunity.

FWIW.
For some reason I recall that Cox .15 Medallion/TD heads also fit the Gilbert .11 engines.
I've never had a Gilbert .11 so I don't know for sure.
Maybe one of the better informed ( read- smarter) CEF members will respond and confirm one way of the other.

Top left corner looks like a later Holland Hornet glowhead, either made for a Holland or even a Cox engine.

I believe the Fox .099 head fits the Gilbert 11, but not sure of the Cox .15.
Gilbert 11 heads seem plentiful and are more reliable than the 7 heads. The ones in the picture look to be the smaller ones.

SOLD! Re: Cox engine parts SOLD to Mark from Oregon

Post  batjac Sat Jan 04, 2020 6:40 pm

Okay, I got the parts.  I haven’t played with this stuff yet, I’ve got a New year’s Resolution project I have to finish first, but I did take a few minutes to check out the glow heads and look over the other parts.

I obviously did not open the NIP Hornet glow head package to check it.   The two loose Testors heads are brand new and glowed brightly.  The one Testors head in the cylinder also glows brightly.

The Cox .15 head is discolored on top, but doesn’t seem to have seen fuel, and glows very bright.  The three .049 glow heads glowed nicely.  Also, the three .020 glow heads in the loose cylinders all glow brightly.  An extra bonus: one of the .049 heads is a small thread glow head.  You can never have too many of those in working condition.

The two different Gilbert .074 heads confuse me.  They both glow nicely, yet the one on the left is like all the other Gilbert .074 heads I’ve seen, but the one on the right is shaped like the Gilbert .11 heads I have.

So, even without the PeeWee stuff, the glow heads were worth the purchase.

Two of the gems of this purchase are the two PeeWee backplates.  Not a broken off ear on either of them!  The two tanks will give me a chance to try out a method I’ve been thinking of for making drilled out tanks usable again.  Just another idea I need to find time to try.

There’s a loose piston that I initially thought was for a .020 from the pictures, but it’s not a Cox piston.  It has a ball and socket connection for the rod, but it has a domed top and is slightly larger in diameter.  Maybe it’s for a .035 engine?

Cox engine parts SOLD to Mark from Oregon DSCN6899

The two small Cox wrenches I had assumed to be for .020 engines, since the engines in the lot were PeeWees, but they are actually .010 wrenches.  I’ve a surfeit of wrenches now, but that just means I can keep one in each of my field boxes and not worry about losing one.

So, final tally of this purchase is:

Seven Cox glow heads (One .15, three .049, and three .020), one NIP Hornet head, three Testors heads and two Testors glow head gaskets, and two Gilbert .074 heads.  All in serviceable to great condition.
Four PeeWee crankcases, needing to be cleaned up and serviceability to be determined.
Three PeeWee cylinders, two with pistons/rods in them, also needing to be cleaned up and serviceability determined.
A late model Testors .049 cylinder, slightly rusted but probably serviceable.
Two great PeeWee backplates.
Two drilled out PeeWee tanks with serviceable copper-beryllium reeds and retainer clips.
Three filtered fuel can inserts.
One .049 piston/rod.
One Mystery piston/rod.
One PeeWee crankshaft with the splined end broken off.
One weighted .049 spinner nut.
One TD .020 firewall mount backplate.
One TD .010 fuel tank mount - missing back.
One aluminum two-hole backplate that I know I have an engine for somewhere, but the model escapes me right now.

All-in-all, a great deal.  Thank you for selling me these spares, Ed.

Oh, and as an FYI for anyone interested, approximately five Cox .049 copper glow head gaskets equals one Testors aluminum glow head gasket.

Thanks again, Ed

Thanks,

Sorry, my Friend. The heads are .074 heads, not .11 heads. I'll dig around and see if I have a spare .11 head or two in my non-Cox parts bins.

The drilled out tanks are great for free flight planes. Just run a long piece of tubing out and see how many seconds it takes to run out for, say 4" to get your timed run. Also good for using a bigger external tank for RC or a control line stunt tank. Fairly common old school trick.

Well, I had three (four?) Gilbert .11 engines, but no Gilbert .07 engines.  Since I acquired two new Gilbert .07 glow heads, I had no choice but to buy this a couple of weeks ago when it showed up in the RCG classifieds:

No mufflers, and definitely in need of a good cleaning, but it's not seized and definitely worth the $20 shipped it cost me.  Thinking that it shouldn't be too hard to make a couple of chip mufflers for this.

Edwin,

Whoops! Sorry to take so long to reply.  My preferred battery setup these days is a clothes-pin type clip from Bernie (https://coxengines.ca/cox-glow-plug-clip-tweezer-style.html) and two D-Cell battery holders zip tied together and wired in parallel:

Mark O’Sullivan, just curious as to your construction methods on making a “chip” muffler for that newly acquired Gilbert engine. Or should I be reading your post with my best Irish accent??

The Gilberts had two different style mufflers.  Maybe muffler is too strong a word as they only made a small difference to the engine volume.  The 11s and 7s both used the common headers you see on many of them.
Cox engine parts SOLD to Mark from Oregon Images10
You often come across sellers offering these with either 2 left of 2 right mufflers, to make them look even.  This would be suitable in Free flight and R/C application.  When fitted with the correct ones the pipes stay parellel to each other and to the fuselage with the engine off-set to the outside of the C/L circle.  While looking the same, the 11 & 7 mufflers are different sizes.

The other type was supplied on the 7 as fitted to the Wing Thing, as seen here.

This engine was installed as a pusher, so it couldn't use the pipe extensions as used on the aeroplanes.

Having somewhat belatedly read this thread-I can confirm that a Cox .15 glowhead does indeed fit the Gilbert 11 engine.....whether the engine will RUN with a cox head is entirely another question-and one only answerable by bench testing...

The Gilbert 11 heads seem plentiful and inexpensive, plus far more reliable than the .074 heads. I wonder if you can go the other way and use a Gilbert head on the Cox .15? How available are originals?
