A longer wing is usually more efficient, just look at a glider as an example.

To learn more about airfoils you should do a search on the internet, as there is a 'ton' of info on the subject. Although your question seems simple enough, it's like asking: Why is the sky is blue? The correct answer is kind of long and drawn out.

Yup make it longer you also get a plane better at carrying a load.
Just look at the lazy bee very floaty but can be heavy.

High aspect ratio wing results in reduced induced drag. Good for gliding, not necessarily for powered flight.
How to get high lift from a flat bottom airfoil? The same way as from any airfoil:
1. Make the wing surface large
2. Make the plane go faster
3. Make sure the angle of attack is optimal for your airfoil
