Does a Conquest, when new, have a tapered liner? I find it difficult to turn over the engine.

Yes they have a very nice fit, don't turn it over without a glow plug in it. You can also preheat the cylinder before the first start if needed.

So, this inquiring mind wants to know. Why not turn it over without a glow plug installed? I personally cannot see anything wrong with doing such. I had just never heard of this before and am curious. Thanks.

I think he is saying not to turn it over without the intent of starting it. OTOH with the glow head installed it’s almost impossible to turn it over. Very tight pinch on the conquest. Much like the Norvel engines, pre-heating is a good idea to prevent damage.

Lack of lubrication I suppose ,  once it starts it will quickly heat and expand, lessening the pinch. Turning it over by hand while cold and no fuel in it causes metal to metal contact. When you intend to start it you usually prime it with fuel.

That’s what I have been told. I do have a Conquest and can attest to the pinch, but I have never started it. Maybe Kris has another reason.

Without the glow plug in the engine the piston will really bite at TDC, while with the glow plug installed the compression appears to help avoiding metal to metal contact. I don't want to speculate on why, but is very clear. It is very important for high performance ABC engines, but the principle is the same for other engines too.

Thanks Kris. I was wondering because Cox doesn't mention this in the instructions for breaking in. I found that P.Chinn mentions it in one of his articles (see Sceptre Flight) , but he didn't have to cope with it as Cox sent him an engine that ran for 1/2h already at the factory.
