This plan was recently published on Aerofred. It's a CL plane made by the Belgian manufacturer Svenson for the BabeBee .049

Great looking plane!  Found it out on Outerzone also.
Here's a build link to a forum that might need translasition?

A good looking plane indeed! Thanks for posting Smile

Since the plans need to be scaled and printed anyway, I can’t help thinking about scaling it to 120% and using a Tee Dee for power Huh...

Likewise, thanks for posting! cheers Its definitely build season here where i am.

I was thinking of using an 049 TD also, but rather than scaling it, using longer lines if possible to get extra are space (distance from the ground. Lol ) lol! But either way it looks like it wants to fly stunts. Yep, I reckon Im going to have to build that one and give it a go thanks. Thumbs Up Maybe building something with a built up wing and fuse will help calm down the way I fly sometimes (plank wing, plank fuse, 1 balsa sheet, fly it like you stole it HaHaHa) and I might improve. lol!

Surly is a nice small design for sure. The wing must also be quite strong with all those ribs in it.

In the 1973 Svenson catalogue the model has a TeeDee:

Neither AeroFred or OuterZone have the "plans" for the Formers or Ribs.  Found this Build log on a Dutch or Belgian Forum with this picture:

The shape of the ribs can be seen in the plane's side view on the plan.

Svenson Coxy plan Empty DXF cutting file

Post  Bongai Thu Nov 11, 2021 5:57 pm

A friend of mine put together the plan from the A4 copies posted on the Modelbouwforum chat.
I already have begun to draw the parts in Autocad, to be able to cut it by laser or CNC router.
When I find the time, I will finish the job and post it here, on Outer Zone and Aerofred.

A remark from builders: thicken the profile a little - NACA0010 on plan - to make it fly better. Up to your discretion, but indeed a Nobler or Blue Pants of the same period have thicker profiles - 15 to 17%. A suggestion was to make it 16 mm thick, only 11%. For fast gliders Prof. Quabeck recommended to make the rudder 12% thick ... How many versions do you want to build and test ?

When I saw the coxy it reminded me of the Jim Saftig 1949 Mini Zilch with a different canopy.  If you look at the Mini Zilch plan you will notice that it seems like an exact copy. SIG manufacturing sells a laser kit of the mini Zilch.

I like both but to get the mini Zilch kit posted from USA to Oz would be too expensive so.......
Coxy it is whereas I can build it from the plan.
I took a look at the Dutch build which was beautifully made.
I have never made my own " moulded" canopy but would like to have a go.
I have never used a vacuum bag so need to get my head around the process.
The material ( coke bottle ) is cheap enough.
Would like to know which wood he used to make the form.
Where I am, I could use Tasmanian oak which is not really Oak but easy to carve.
I am in for the challenge.
Any takers for Coxy Canopies?
Make it worth my while!!!
Lovely looking little thing and yes......
Its a bit Zilchy!!! But Coxy instead.
How longer lines should I use?
40ft?
Woody.

Svenson Coxy plan Empty lasercut

Post  Bongai Thu Apr 28, 2022 5:24 pm

Now that I have the time, my AutoCAD licence is expired. I will try to get a lasercut file finished next week.
For canopies I use hard styrofoam blocks with paper templates glued in between, then a layer of glasfiber and car filler to make it smooth, Take the bottle cut the bottom and close the bottle over the form. Heaten up in the oven or with a blower and suck it in form with a vacuum cleaner.

Many thanks for your advice and help.
Do you mean a laser cut file for the canopy profiles?
This is all new techy for me so I will try to understand the modern way.
So....I form the bottle over the form and insert it into an oven.
I have a heat gun....will that do it?
Then the bit I do not get is how I attach the hoover to it when it is in the oven?
Does it have to be inserted into a bag?
You will have to explain blow by blow as If I know nothing.....( and that is not far from the truth )

I am a complete wurzzle!!!!

Svenson Coxy plan Empty Canopy video

Post  Bongai Fri Apr 29, 2022 5:22 am

Sorry for the empty words. Here a video, no vacuum needed:
https://youtu.be/x29Bo1HTUvo

It is easier to make the form fit on the fuselage. This form is not complex; no need for templates.

Here is what I meant with the former description. Better use hard styrofoam shape, spackle, correct, put a glasfiber cover, filler, smoothen out.

Woody,
Make your canopy plug from a hard wood shaped appropriately. Then cut several pieces of flat stock to build up a tall base under the canopy plug. Soft wood like pine is fine for the spacers/base.
Then go buy a bottle of Sparkling Ice brand flavored water. I like it for it's narrow body.
Drink the water.
Cut the top off and keep for a funnel.
Cut the bottom off and toss it.

Now stack your canopy plug and bases into the body of the remainder such that the canopy plug is stressed against the body by the bases, and hit it with your hottest hair dryer (narrow body requires fewer spacers).
The bottle will shrink around the plug. Then you cut from the opposite side to remove the stacked bases and trim the resultant canopy from the body.

It may take a few tries to heat and shrink as needed. You may actually need to use the oven for more even heating. I made my plug from balsa and hardened it with CA glue. I won't do that again...but it was effective. See my "BHM Mosquito in MS" thread for a really deep draft and very narrow canopy made just this way.

Making a canopy plug should not be hard but you would need to build the fuselage first to make sure that the plug would follow the contour of the fuse. You could use hard balsa to do it then you can make a canopy and see how it fits the fuse. If it doesn`t fit like you want you can always modify the plug until it fits.
