Wanted Engine mounts

Post  Ken Cook Mon Aug 09, 2021 3:49 pm

I purchased these metal mounts on Ebay about 2-3 years ago. The mounts are cast aluminum, a bit crude but effective. They were a "Buy It Now" product for $4 and some change. I looked in my past sales to find this seller. My history won't allow me to view sales going back that far. If anyone knows this individual or has purchased these same mounts and has extras, I would be interested. The mounts were not drilled or tapped, I did this for my engine. They were not flat and required them to be trued. In addition, the mating surface for the engine lugs were not parallel to each other requiring some filing time. Even with this extra work, they perform terrific, they're not weighty. Dave Brown mounts don't work for me. They constantly break and the engine constantly comes loose.

I have two Medallions mounted on my twin Mustang using these mounts. As you can see, there's some porosity issues but the material drilled terrific and tapped equally as well. Plenty strong and inexpensive. I really wished I saved this seller's info.

Ken,
Please show us the whole bird. I'd love to see the money shot...right 3/4 view showing engines and tanks...and the rest of the plane.

TIA

Maybe you could check out a material supply dealer for some T bar aluminum material. Might be special order and you would need a full bar? IDK. I had used some 2" x 2" x 1/4" wall T bar for mounts up to .46 size. It was out of the scrap pile and is no longer available to me but maybe you could try Metal Supermarket or another local supplier. You would likely need/want access to a mill. There are different shapes with a fillet , and some other odd radius' on the edge that can be cut off. The quality of the aluminum extrusion would be better than the cast IMHO.

I totally agree in terms of extrusion vs cast for strength. However, crashing isn't something I do typically and these mounts for a mere $4 these were nicely done. It was apparent that these were not made commercially. They looked like a crude fishing weight jig but cleaned up, they're terrific. One of my club members also purchased a few and he offered them to me but I told him to use them vs me use them. He couldn't locate the seller either.

Jim, not a great pic but here's one. Not much to see, tanks are Perfect tanks totally taken apart and redone. I say this all the time, it's a must or your just asking for trouble. Thoroughly cleaned and soldered with the correct solder and all the small tubing provided in the original tank thrown out. I made the tanks uniflow which is also a must. I generally don't uniflow wedge tanks like these because I've had issues doing so. These are working well.

This is a Brodak kit, fuselages were changed a bit. Landing gear changed as well.

My son Shawn flying it. I believe this was the first flight and it was almost it's last. The wind almost pushed it into the ground

Nice twin engine sound. Great control in the end after one engine cut out to glide to a smooth landing.

Been there with my P-38. Thanks for rekindling memories.
