That is super cool! I've noticed on my Valentine Speed Bees which are disc valve and my VGE RR2 which is rotary valve, that all these engines require at least five ounce of fuel through them before they even begin to run well. They are still slowly getting better even after the initial five ounce break in. Enjoy that little gem. It really looks good.

That's quite an observation, and certainly plausible. I had always assumed that the fins were added to improve the looks and help differentiate the engine from the other engines (and to help market a higher priced motor). It stands to reason that the disk will add more heat due to friction and that much of the heat will be conducted directly to the tank. Too much heat and fuel boiling becomes a problem, unless it can be dissipated.

Good call, Mud.

Another day, another gem of knowledge learned from this group. Very Happy

And how. On a couple of occasions the engine abrubtly stopped. As if someone flipped a switch. Fuel starting popping out the vent tubes and I could hear fuel/oil sizzling on the inside.

fit90 wrote:They are still slowly getting better even after the initial five ounce break in.
This one is getting better too. When I started taching the engine it barely made 12k. Now it steadies at 14, with only 10% nitro. I think it will continue to improve.

That's funny. But on a serious note, Kim, have you checked your meds? I can't be the only one here wondering about you. Very Happy

Mud

Well of course...I take them diligently! However, being a fan of efficiency I decided that this day-to-day dosage stuff is a bunch of wasted motion. So, I chuck 'em all down first thing Monday morning, and I'm good for the week !

It's a good thing too...because I've noticed that I only see the Purple Dust Bunnies on Mondays...and need the meds to help me resist their evil directives !!!!

Introducing the new - "QZ" RR-1 Empty It may be time to up the nitro in the fuel

Post  RknRusty Thu Feb 23, 2012 8:38 am

One of the articles in Bernie's files on building speed Bees recommends to always run-in an engine on the fuel and prop you intend to put it to work with. If you want this thing to have some teeth, maybe it's time to get some 20% or 25% juice in it with a 5x3 prop. Wake the baby up.

Huh... Then again if it flies apart, forget I mentioned it. Smile

Mudhen wrote:I had to do another teardown and overhaul on the "QZ RR-1." But I think it was worth it. I was shocked to discover just how much exhaust residue formed on the cylinder wall and piston. This informs me that although the upper engine was designed for a muffler, once pressure builds inside the chamber, it just can’t efficiently remove the spent fuel and oil. This, of course, increased the wear on the engine, (I had to replace the crankcase and crankshaft,) and severely reduced performance. I believe the RR-1 was designed to “get up and go.” It may have been a novel idea to install a muffler, but in the end I’m only restricting what could be pretty cool design performance. On the upside, I switched fuel to Power Master 20/20 and running temperature was radically diminished. I could touch the engine at low rpm without getting burned. I think I’ll leave the muffler installed, but run it wide open. It was a fun project and lesson learned. Next?

Let me know if you still want me to do a flying run-in for you. I was looking forward to getting my hands on such a unique engine.

Does anyone have any pics from this thread?!
It sounded so neat and I suppose the image host has changed... I've run across this several times now, on older threads...

Not an image host issue. Some years back, Mud went through and edited out most of his posts for reasons which are still unknown.

Introducing the new - "QZ" RR-1 Empty Wow.

Post  Boats13 Thu Mar 28, 2024 10:19 am

I was staying quiet in reply. I feel bad that I brought it up, now. That is a lot of work. Something must have really angered or hurt him. His posts seem brilliant. Not as prolific as some, but always a good contribution, at least all that I have read.

I just bought an engine on evilBay,  well not just, but not over 3-4 months ago. The gentleman was VERY knowledgeable and helpful. We laughed about our obsession with engines. He said he was selling some to "support his hobby" and sent pics of his Cox engines, in retail store glass cases. It looked like at least three, maybe four of them. Packed. With.  Cox. Engines. I mentioned the CEF at least twice, and he pointedly ignored it. He shared his name and I know where it shipped from. I won't share that here, as it's not my place. But, something about the way he wrote reminded me of Mudhen's posts. I am really wondering if that was him. His knowledge of Cox was phenomenal. The engines were exquisite.  Don't get me wrong, he had other brands, too.

I just realized, today, that I did not post a Hi, I'm a new guy here, back in 2018 when I joined. I really thought I had. I searched, but nope! I will rectify that, today. I have felt very welcomed, even with that faux pas.

Thanks,

CT

I'm sorry.. I shouldn't have posted what I did. (I deleted it) Don't feel bad man. We all have a mutual love for this hobby.. and when one of us goes missing for whatever reason.. we're concerned for them.
