K&B Stallion .049 Empty K&B Stallion .049

One of my flying friends gave me his K&B Stallion last weekend after he broke it. When a engine is frozen, forcing it over at the field is not the place to free it up. My buddy Dan is great for doing this and he should know better. I knew when I saw it on the ground with the Top Flite Nylon prop broken next to it that it was now broke. For those unaware, the K&B Tornado .049 and Stallion .049 use the same piston which has 3 piece internals. A circlip holds a plate similar to the Cox setup. In forcing it over, the circlip stayed in it's groove and the plate pulled out past the circlip. I was able to straighten the plate which wasn't exactly easy. Removing the circlip however just about tested every bit of patience I had. I finally got it back together after a little more than a hour and I ran it in the yard. Temp was 20 deg and the wind is howling up pretty good. It fired right up as it's been dormant for nearly 40 years. I ran it on 10% nitro high castor fuel . I have to admit it was pretty impressive for a old timer.

Not sure if I should have laughed or not! Lol. lol! cheers But I did. the picture you paint of someone stuffing up and engine at the field doing something they really shouldnt and then hey Ken want this? Quite funny to me anyway. Good job fixing it! cheers yes, sometimes things should be done away from the field, distractions of flying planes and people running a'mok, especially all those sad old people flying control line internal combustion model planes. Really lol! cheers Old Bugger

I was just following one on ebay. Nice looking engine that I don't have. I didn't bid, but wish I had. Went for a reasonable $34.

Cool free engine (with a little work) and running . I have one of those didn't know it has a 3 piece piston set in them . I will put it on the list of ones to run ! Here's a video of one running > Looks like the tan is missing . Very Happy

Now I really wish I had bid.  I have that same vice or very similar not snazzy red, but machinery gray.  PO overstressed it and broke one of the jaws, found it at a flea mkt for five bucks and repaired with JB Weld. Not pretty, but it holds.

It does sound pretty strong , i don't know what the weight is but I guess the tank can bee removed , from the look have to make a back plate for it Smile well I had to know its 75.9 grams with a prop on it . So about 2.5 oz. Snowman Going to need some wing area to fly fun with it .

The tank isn't removable. It's a casting and it's very egg shell like. The tank protrudes into the back of the case which assists in keeping the rod on the crankpin. I had one of the screws break when I took it apart. The head snapped right off. This is a problem because they're 3-48 screws. Sourcing 3-48 screws over 3/4" is a pain in the !@#$. These screws are a tad over 1". The tank is recessed in the back and there's a flat plate which sits inside which is also cast. The plate has 4 recessed holes for the screws that hold everything together. K&B uses a paper gasket under the plate which of course I tore.

I just guessed socket cap, 1.25" length

Bolt Depot also has them in 1" stainless phillips pan head at 18c each

As much as I prefer socket heads, the head is too wide and too deep. Not saying they couldn't be used, they would need to be turned down. The screw that comes with the engine is a very small slotted stove head. A fillister head might work if I could find one. I strongly feel the stainless pan head won't fit in the backplate recess either. Of course these are my speculations and I could be entirely incorrect but I do know the socket heads are out without mods.

Thanks for filling me in Ken , mine is in pretty good shape and not castor locked so i could probably get away with flushing the tank and try run . McMaster - carr has the fillister hd https://www.mcmaster.com/screws/thread-size~3-48/18-8-stainless-steel-high-profile-narrow-fillister-head-slotted-screws/ But i don't think they sell singles .
