Got the three Nylint Soap Box Derby racers
As perfect as they can be, the seals on the boxes aren't even broken. But broken they will be, I have plans to down-hill race them a bit on an eight-foot piece of left-over very bendable paneling. I'm pleased they they modeled one of the two years that I ran (1951). Funny part is, it looks much like the clunker that I entered.

I really want to build a soapbox car. By the way, while looking those Nylint models I'm aware that the car designs changed within time as like as real car designs.

I would like to see that Levent. Bet it would be a winner. Most difficult part would be picking out the one to model. I think the older models had the most character, new ones look like a torpedo.
Reminds me of the time my turnbuckle came loose on a test run in New Hampshire. It really did knock me out cold.

Seems the girls have taken over.

Re: Got the three Nylint Soap Box Derby racers
Always dreamed of building a entry race car. No budget, no sponsor, no luck. Between my older brother and a couple of neighborhood friends we scabbed together enough wood from new home construction leftovers to build a downhill coaster that we took turns going downhill at the big hill near our house. No brakes, no safety gear, I'm sure we didn't have the steering restrictor board shown on the model in the picture. But that picture was a almost exact replica of what I remember it to be. Two or three of us would stand at the bottom of the hill to watch for cars coming down the cross street while the driver raced downhill at breakneck speeds!!
Ironic, in this picture the racer is next to some plastic trash bins. My Dad used the racer to haul a couple of the old style galvanized bins out to the end of the driveway on trash pick-up day.(Tuesday) The dirty stinkin' trashman emptied the bins and took the racer!! My dad was apologetic about the loss of the car, but probably relieved we wouldn't get run-over racing down the hill
AHHH what memories!!
