Restoring Trike sportster question

Hi, newbie here, just bought a trike like a I had as a kid and was wondering if anyone knows how to remove the rear wheels so I can take it apart and clean it and see if i can get it running. It looks like they may just pull off but there is a small nut on the plastic rim and it appears to be plastic so not sure if I have to take them off. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

The parts view can be found in "instruction sheets" link on the left of this page under "Cox parts catalogs". This is from year 74.
This does not show much but looks like axle might be treaded. I have never had this model in my hand but all others have a nut on the end of the axle. Some had one side reverse thread. The only exception was the Mercedes racer, it had C clips.

look like a hexagonal chaft The wheels must not turn otherwise it will break this must be sort of pusch lock clip or Somting. I dont have one juste parts of the engine output drive schaft

The nut is not plastic. Go slow and use the proper tools. The plans posted are a good guide as to what is going on in that wheel.
The trike doesn’t come up very much on here. Pictures of your problem are helpful. Apart from Cox engines a lot of members have tech, mechanical and engineering backgrounds. I say all that because anything can be solved with Cox products on here. Somebody has seen it, or we know someone who has.

Thanks guys, the picture helps but still a little baffled on how these come off as it doesn’t look like it is actually threaded. It does look like some sort of clip but in looking at the actually trike I do not see where they would be….

Well got my curiosity going so looked on eBay. The nut is fake. Left wheel slips on the grove in axle.

once the wheel of the drive schaft bushing must be split so that u pul open a bit then it slip on the drive schaft

That looks fantastic. A real tribute to the 70's. As much as I'm into motorcycles, this model never appealed to me. However, seeing the red flake sparkling and that tall seat and yellow letters on the tires just looks amazing.Your photo really does it justice and this would make a great candidate for Cox engine of the month.

thanks for the positive comments, for now it is going on display shelf with some of my other cars (dunebuggy, chaparral, van and lotus Indy car). I grew up in the 70’s and my older 4 brothers all had these, the only one I am missing is the dragster to complete my collection and bring back some good memories.

@davidll1984 looks like the model I have is the “chopper trike” with the big banana seat and did not appear to come with the heat sync. The parts page picture referenced previously was called the “chopper II” and looks like the only difference was the heat sync and the sissy bar instead of the banana seat.

So how did you separate the back rims to install new tires ?

@getback thanks for the message, it has been awhile got busy with some other projects...
@maddog for the tires, the first trick is getting the plastic rim off the axle. As you can see in the picture it is the left side that comes apart. just be careful when prying it apart. I believe I was able to put a small screw driver in the slot on the back of the wheel and slowly work it apart. Once off I removed all the hardened plastic from the original wheels and I believe I was able to just slip on the new wheels as they were so soft and did not need to split the rim, but I am not 100% sure as it has been awhile.
If the new wheels do not go on that easy, then there must have been an obvious way to split the rim (like a plastic ring on the inside that you can remove???) since I did not ask about it in the OP. Once you get the new wheels on you just need to press the rim back on the axle and you should be good to go. Hope that helps!

. Yes I have 0 issue getting wheel off the axle, it's getting the rim separated to remove the tire and have yet to find someone that knows and I even messaged all the eBay sellers selling the replacement tires yet not 1 person knows how lol. It appears the rubber inner tire bead tucks under the center plastic ring to hold beads to rim like an RC car but there is 0 fasteners on in or outter sides of the rim..Patskih2o wrote:@getback thanks for the message, it has been awhile got busy with some other projects...

Well if your not doing anything to attempt to change it it just want happen ,some times you jump in there and do the job JUST BEE CAREFULL I am out of here !

Ok, assuming you are replacing the old tires with new ones, cut the tire off (I think I used a boxed cutter) and then take some pics of the rim without the tire on and that may rattle some cobwebs loose so I remember how I did it. I am pretty sure there is some type of plastic ring inside that you do have to press onto the tire bead that seals them together…
