Worthy project would like to see the result when finished.

Looks like a complete hollow log kit and a challenge to cut out all those parts to replicate.   Just my present kit bashing speed, only I use old rotted out 1X4's.  Smile

I have one of those Scientific kits that I got from Ron Cribbs. Complete and untouched I hesitate to build it because of its historical value. But you gave me and idea. Replicate it. Thought about it but duplicating that spun aluminum cowl and the hollow log fuselage itself is probably beyond my capability.

I would love tracings and drawings of the Lil Stinker. And if you can, the plans sheet and decals too..Any chance you have a flat bed scanner at home? If so, I recommend tracing the parts onto 8.5x11 paper and scanning as PDF. I usually include tick/index marks for four inches just to proof any digital to paper prints. Long decal sheets get scanned as legal size paper, or in overlapping segments for digital stitching later.

That spun engine cowl may be rasonably replicated with the bottom two inches or so of an alumin drink can..There are several various ones on the market in different diameters. I think Starbucks offers one in really skinny and tall cans. One can could provide the flat cowl for the Pitts and the bottom for the cowl.

Jim, I will be making scans of the plans and decal sheet for the Stinker. I have already traced the die-cut parts, and will scan that as well. This is one of the few Musciano hollow logs that is not on Outerzone, so I will send all the scans to them.

Jim,  Mine's the Bel-air but it looks like duaneh has you covered on the Little Stinker.  

The Bel-air will be rescued from the loft, dusted off and placed downstairs on the wall but I probably will not do a thing with it.

A 2 inch dia. vitamin supplement bottle may make a good radial cowl, too. I did this on my half-A Ringmaster GBZ (Ringmaster styled like a Granville Brothers Gee Bee Z Sportster).

My flying buddy Dan made many cowls for Walter Musciano. This would be the version like the Bel Aire. This style was also used on the Tri plane and a few others. Dan also made all of the spun aluminum cowls for Builtrightflyright aka Walter Umland kits. Somewhere on the forum here is a picture of my C-47. The cowlings on my C-47 is the cowlings Dan made for Walter. My son was also helping in making them as well. If enough interest, I probably could talk him into doing more of them.

Hey man that looks Nice ! Presuming you used a hole saw to drill out the log , i didn't think it would work on Balsa . Smile

Eric, you don't need to drill out the log, you split it in half and hollow it and then glue it back together. The hoop for a X-acto works excellent because you have control not too mention and your not going to cut yourself using it. When we would hollow them out, if you held them up to the light, you could see through them.

Yep, Forstner bit.
The first cut was a through hole down through the cockpit. Then turned it over and made blind holes as deep as I dared without breaking out. At this point, the left & right halves were only tack glued together. I split it apart, then hollowed to about 1/8" thickness.

I gave the mating parts of the wood a light coat of gray primer before glueing. When they are glued together, this gives horizontal and vertical datum lines that can't be sanded off.

I just finished my replica build. Tried to keep it true to the original kit, the only real changes I made are dihedral in the lower wing, and a more accurate shape for the cowl & wheel pants.
I used a product engine with a horseshoe backplate, and a homemade 1/2 oz. tank built into the fuselage. The cowl, pants, struts, and cabanes are painted. The rest is monokote. I used Betty Skelton's color scheme on top, but whimped out on the bottom. Hers had checkerboards, I just used red wings and white tail. Final weight came out to 6-1/4 oz.

I would love to own something like that. Wish I had bought up every Scientific HL kit that I saw as a kid. Still, I had my share.

Beautiful job personalized with your own hand-cut parts. What are your plans for it?

I just cleaned up the horseshoe that came on that Cox Rocket. Berryman's dip and disassembly. Mylar reed. Mega tool marks. Leaving as is.

Nice build i like the lil stinker I like biplanes they have a way of flying that I like For the majority Both wings increase lift and give them a look that I like I like the color you chose it's really pretty Biplane

Thanks, guys. Glad you like it. After getting into the build, I started wondering why I was expending so much effort on a kit that was obviously a low-cost product to begin with.

I do intend to fly it, at least until the top wing breaks off on the landing flip. Which will happen soon, as the attachment is not strong. Then I’ll probably repair it and hang it up in the shop.

Bob, I like the engine that came on your Cox Rocket. That is my favorite configuration for a Cox reed valve engine. Horseshoe backplate for easier mounting than a postage stamp, slit cylinder means dual bypasses, snap starter enables a close fitting cowl and spinner.

Going back and looking at your pictures, it's easy on the eyes.................I thought a dead space behind the cockpit would be improved by replicating the triangle there as shown on the top wing.  Perhaps a bit too much decoration as the original did not have it.

It took a lot of skill and patience to cut out and apply all those monokote applications. Been there.
