Has anyone ever come up with a solution to missing lugs, besides buying a new backplate?

Seemed like that subject came up somewhere here or on the other group. Involved making up an aluminum plate with lugs to bolt to the back of the original backplate with screws through it from inside. OR...I just dreamed I read it...hard to tell sometimes...

yeah...I got a really messed up backplate...was gonna try that...not like there's anything to lose. I was gonna go with an oval shape with two holes like the Atwoods and Hornets...

If there is a remaining fragment of the lug a small flat washer could grip the remaining portion then attach the washer/lug with a screw or bolt.

Or just pretend the broken lug doesn't bother you. Laughing

Yeah...that'd work as long as there IS a nub, and the others are in fairly good shape. I got a REALLY tortured backplate (not the one in the photo) that may get messed with. Looks like there IS space on either side, outside the webbing between the screw holes, where a small screw could fit...

It should be noted by our "newbs" that the pickup tube in Kim's photo is in the control line position.Missing lugs on tank backplate 3929217648

Seems to me that an aluminum backplate affixed with the tank securing screws would work. The problem would be making it leak proof and drilling a venturi hole. I have some clapped out pee wee backplates that could benefit from this type of mod. Some are a bit warped so sealing the new mount to the backplate may be tricky.

Yeah, maybe a piece of tubing on the screws between the new plate and backplate...

I've never seen a backplate with internal webbing like that. It's not a Babe Bee is it?

Clamp it in a vice and screw the vice on the plane.

Just kidding around about the vice . For all the trouble and cost in time and money of trying to rectify the broken lugs it would seem that a spare motor or two ( parts motors ) picked from a swap shop or fellow modelers would be a better solution. I don't remember the thread of the back plate screws but maybe threaded rod with nuts silver soldered on to the proper lenth and leaving extra threaded rod past the nut would give you something to hang the motor with. Or clean the back plate surface well and rough it up and glue on some 1/16" aluminum with a good structural epoxy and make new holes. Allow for the tank screws and venturi hole.I would look for the parts motor myself.

With I modeling vice attached I'd opine that there would be serious CG concerns. Wink

Decades ago on Taiwan Island young me managed to dig dirt with most 049 powered airships. Broken ears were common. Took a very long time for new $3.50 Cox stuff to row the boat to our door front. My dad made a Image of the 049 back plate on a block of wood and carved out the shape. He sanded the back of the plate, cleaned it very good with MEK, mixed up some JB weld, used bees wax for release in the carved wood block, added the JB weld to each corner in the mold, and set the broken backplate in to the mold. sand paper, Small files, drill out hole, and poof...new ears!

Or you could buy these for $5.00, sand/grind smooth and JB weld to back of broken backplate
