I had never started anything bigger than a .049 engine. I thought I would work up to my .15 so I decided to fire up my .09 today. In a word....Wow!

It's a real screamer and with the old top flight 7x4 pushes a lot of air. I am just about deaf. You should have seen the castor cloud in my garage! It was a bit of a pain to start but, after a few mins of flipping she fired off and spit fuel everywhere. A couple turns of the needle and Wheeeeeee!

Nothing much else to say, I'm sure it's no big deal to most, I just enjoyed myself and wanted to share.

YES YOU SHOULD !!!! While you're both very talented and could, like my Hero Joe Wagner, become skilled lip-readers, I understand that it's kind of troublesome !!

I prefer headset types in the winter as they also keep your ears warm, and can be easily wiped clean with a paper towel, where plugs can get fuel-logged, and make a guy feel, well, kinda squishy....

Remember, much like several other bodily functions, when hearing goes away...it STAYS away !!!!

This concludes "Kim's Hearing Safety Lecture".

Oh, and yes..the Big Dogs are Awesome !!!!

A pal turned up during the snow with a very fast looking plane with one strapped to the front.
We/I gave up after about 20 mins.

John,

You may have been dealing with some environmental issues but, I can say she floods real easy. Try less turns on the needle until it fires and open the needle more until it peaks. Less is more with the TD's I start all my TD's lean then richen to peak.

Tank height makes a difference too.

It's is TRUE than you complainers of hearing difficulties are "hearing impaired" because you didn't LISTEN to my advice to wear shooting muffs when running engines.

I will do just that. I have a set of muffs in my gun cabinet. You would think I would have already pulled them out!

Glad its running and good for you Ron. Looks like Venturi is opened up alot, looks real big. Could cause suction problem. The TD .09 is a very fine little engine. You should hear a Cyclon .15 at 28K sound is unreal.

Never thought of that Dan. It if it is enlarged it wasn't done by me. It's an ebay special. The carb body is from Mike Parkin. What is the normal venturi throat diameter?

It really winds up! Doubt it's 28K though! I would like to hear that cyclon .15

I just took a look at the venturi it looks smooth. If it was drilled someone did an excellent job doing it.

I should add the compression was very strong. I could have used another gasket, just didn't have one. It did the high compression prop wobble like my Bernie Texaco headed one.

That may be why it was harder to start.

It's an older .09 prob 60's no milled cylinder for a wrench or venturi screen. Maybe the older venturi's are bigger?

Ron,
I have two TD .09's an hole is about 1/8" diameter. About half of what you have there. Your opening ids way big for suction. You could sleeve it down with Al. tubing. Do not cover holes for fuel. Make some kind of insert to reduce venturi. Or run a blsadder but needle valve may not work as threads are not fine enough. Sleeve it down and watch engine start easy. Best luck with it,Dan

Another option is get a stock Venturi.
The bore in the rotating barrel of my TD 09 RC carb measures 0.195. I know this is comparing apples to oranges but just another data point for what its worth.

Let me measure mine. 1/8 diameter sounds real small, almost .049 size. If it has been enlarged I will grab a new one and see if it starts easier. That venturi has a ding on it so it needs replaced anyway. Thanks for the help!
