I contacted him yesterday - His response - Yes, we are safe. We live in Bursa, north western zone of Turkey. Earthquake is in southern Turkey, far to us.

Very bad natural disaster, it was. God save all of us and our families from all disasters.

That is good to know, looked on the map and he is a good distance from the area of the worst damage, living here in earthquake country, it always hits home when you here of a big one. We had a quake about 130 mi. to the east of us here, a 7.1m, and even this far away it was a pretty good ride.

When we lived in Long Beach in the 1980's, we had the big one at Whittier Narrows in 1987, about 20 miles from us, was 5.9 on the Richter Scale.

https://www.earthquakeauthority.com/Press-Room/Press-Releases/2017/Anniversary-of-1987-Whittier-Narrows-earthquake-of

It cracked the plaster on our walls near the front door entrance. (Lathe and plaster interior, house built in 1926). Scared my wife and our son then a toddler. Otherwise, house stood firm.

Glad to hear that @Levent Suberk wasn't in the area where the earthquake hit.

Thanks for asking. As stated by Bob, I'm well.

It was a very severe natural disaster. SAR teams arrived to Turkey from foreign countries including USA. Turkey moved 3 meters by this earthquake. First wave was 7.6 R and second one was 7.5 Richter after several hours. Thousands of buildings collapsed. Hard days for people because it is winter time, coldness is another danger. Food, water and dresses have been gathering from all cities of Turkey. There is a queque in front of Kızılay mobile blood donation vehicles and centres. God save all people.

Very sad news, Levent, the internet is viral with videos shot by local people,  showing how the earthquake shook houses that then collapsed, horrible...our heart-felt condolences to all victims and families are sent with this post. Hungary has also sent a team of rescuers with specially trained rescue dogs, who participate in the recovery of those trapped in the ruins..I went through a similarly strong quake when I lived in Iran in the late 1980-s, with tremors continuing several days afterwards, always coming during the night just to make it even more scary,  and do know how horrible this is.

Best wishes, stay safe, András.

It's gratifying to see the whole world responding. It's nice to have friends. Eleven thousand, a staggering number killed. A baby born alive under the rubble to a mother that did not make it. People right now trapped waiting for rescue. Transports being loaded with professionals from the USA are on their way.
