Joe and the Camel

Joe and the Camel
and the Ryan ST...........
At a standpoint on the RX-7 so thought I would attack the lesser demanding Testors Camel that Joe Gardner gifted me. I had the idea that I could knock it out in an hour or two leaving me free to concentrate on the Cox .020 Ryan.
Not so fast. A couple of hours turned into the greater part of a couple of days. Joe sent them to me "as found" and the previous owner didn't do it any favors. Obviously flown, the propeller's tips had eaten into the ground, the landing gear struts were broken and misshapen, the hub caps were missing as was the plastic cylinder array and the needle valve extension. Just how I like them!!
I filed down and reshaped the original propeller eliminating the rough spots and repaired the landing gear. Soaked the engine in Berrymans and brushed it on the castor soaked engine compartment. Works wonders. Still working on stringing the guy wires, hub caps, NV extension, and cylinder array.
Thanks again Joe, one down, one to go.

Re: Joe and the Camel
Enjoying your car project Bob but glad to see you working on a plane or two as well…. It’s part of your ID!! …. And what a kind gift from akjgardner, Kudos to him!….I like that PB style engine, I’ve read they’re actually pretty good runners….Looking forward the Ryan rehab…. Lot of stylin with that little plane…. Really like that backplate mount for the .020…. I noticed (I think) a hole in the .020 crank case for the starter spring? … I have a .020 like that…. Was always curious what the hole in the case was for…

Thanks Robert, and I do love the little thing. And it's no story that I have always wanted one. Going to take my time with it. Wrinkles need to be addressed, broken post on the engines support, broken off nipple on the fuel tank, and the pilot guys have got to come out as I plan on painting it. Hate to, but gotta happen, too much staining and too many issues. But I will use the exact same colors. I would never fly it. Will have to look for decals.
This must be the hole that you mentioned. Honestly, I never noticed it. Doesn't appear to be for the starter spring though???
None of my other .020's have it.

Pretty sure that whole was part of the throttle control. If my memory serves and it usually doesn’t…

Interesting information, Thanks…. It looks like your .020 has a left hand starter spring and prop?…. That’s a rare bird…

Checking on that Robert.
Meanwhile, I cut out the lumber for the twins mount. Still have to screw and glue. Stained "Early American", I couldn't find "Early British".
They will fit nicely between the mirrors and the shelves. Keep Mauricio company.
They have precident.

Don't break that little red engine mount on the Ryan. They are very hard to find. I tried but ended up with a tank on my .020.

Yes, I'll wear my "be very careful" hat when I do that one.
Camel found a home. Even saved the original owners control handle and string with it. I have done this with many of my recoveries.

Re: Joe and the Camel
Jim, with all this about ears and when I read about the razor, I stopped couldn't read further. Then I listened to the song Bob was alluding to:
Didn't know Bob, it was about Vincent and his artist friend, went back and read Jim's link further. Didn't realize that Vincent cut his own ear and not Gauguin's. I thought it would be more vindictive, like that in Johnny Cash's song, A Boy Named Sue.

I kind of like the idea of settling for an ear Johnny Cash's style. Wouldn't that be more in keeping with a British Sopwith Camel?
And, kudos to Joe Gardner for his nice gift to you!

Song lyrics wrote:Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye
He was big and bent and gray and old
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
And I said, "My name is Sue, how do you do
Now you're gonna die"
(Yeah, that's what I told him)
Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down, but to my surprise
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer
I kind of like the idea of settling for an ear Johnny Cash's style. Wouldn't that be more in keeping with a British Sopwith Camel?
And, kudos to Joe Gardner for his nice gift to you!

Bob, by lost meaning the artist who sang American Pie? I watched that video, amazing the amount spent to produce the correography and making it seem seamless from the camera's point of view, an amazing amount of video editing.rsv1cox wrote:My other favorite Don Mclean song and this one my favorite interpertation. I can go from Johhny Cash to Ludwig in a heartbeat.

Just out of curiosity, regarding the Camel..... In your other thread, I saw the handle on teh wing. Was teh handle designed as such to be wrapped up and slid onto a wing for storage?

Maybe, it's a convenient storage spot that I have used over the years. As mentioned, I try to keep the handle with the plane that it came with. This time I even saved the string. Flyable with a replacement NV as is with most of my recoveries. Maybe some great grandson will take it down in the future and fly it.
Only real damage is when the PO tried to pry the castor stuck engine off the fuselage mount. Cleaned it up best I could. Only one screw holds the whole thing together, rest are snap/friction fits.
