Memorial Day 2023
Memorial Day 2023
Today, we remember and respect all who have made the ultimate sacrifice protecting our freedoms and interests, at home and around the globe. It's not just a day off of work or out of school, not simply a day to save 30% on a new mattress, and not just another day to sit around, drink beer and eat hamburgers and hotdogs off the grill. While we may choose to do such things on Memorial Day, we must not forget those who afforded us the freedom to do so.

British Legion wrote:John McCrae wrote the poem In Flanders Fields which inspired the use of the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance.
In the spring of 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote his now famous poem after seeing poppies growing in battle-scarred fields. In Flanders Fields
The poem by John McCrae
In Flanders' fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders' fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high,
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders' Fields.

Re: Memorial Day 2023
I watched the National Memorial Day Concert last night on PBS as I always do. Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise as hosts as they have been for years. Always a moving ceremony honoring those lost but also survivors.
Joint Chiefs of Staff were there as usual including the new Space Commands Chief wearing what I think is their new silly uniform. Entertainment was first rate but lacked the star power of previous years. Major portion was dedicated to the returning POW's of the Vietnam war.
"A Capital Fourth" on PBS is coming up. Well worth watching.
