Over on Stunthangar there’s a discussion on Black Widows.  In one post a member showed the plank combat planes he builds.  It got me to thinking.  I’ve built a couple of combat planks for .049s that others have designed, but I’ve never drawn up my own.  So, I went ahead and sketched up a little model.  Nothing ground breaking or novel.  Just what I thought I’d build if I wanted to build a minimalistic combat plane.  Simple and quick.

1/8” sheet wing reinforced with a 1/8" stick of basswood on the L.E., 1/16” sheet stab/elevator, 1/8” dorsal fin.  I’m not sure if I want to use 1/16” ply for the booms or 3/32” bass.  Basic thread hinges.

I Like that Mark. You know the types of models that I've designed. Do you have any hard dimensions yet? (wingspan/area) The twin booms will be a lesson in alignment skills.

If I were to install the controls, I'd do it like I did my P38; utilizing the inside of the outboard tail-boom for a pushrod fairlead mount. This also places the bellcrank location outboard of the centerline.. which isn't a bad thing. Having the pushrod out there too; might help to counterbalance the model to the point of only requiring marginal OB wingtip-weight. Lead-outs will be a few inches longer.. but that's ok.

Are you going to build one?

Roddie,

25 inch wingspan for 122 square inches. I like your idea for the pushrod. But, because of the placement of the dorsal fin on the design, it would not be optimal.

For the alignment, I thought that a cardstock template would hold the booms in alignment until I tack them with fast CA, then remove the template to finish glue them in place.
