Re: Parts Cox TD-4
Winging it!
I screwed this thing up a bit. Actually a lot. Instead of first referring to Mark's illustration I got on-line and found where someone indicated that the TD-4's wing was 20" so that's the length to which I cut the replacement wing. Later, I found Marks drawing measured at 21 3/16" which he verified in a PM.
Darn, darn, darn. I did not want to waste a nice sheet of 1/16" balsa so I will just add winglets making up the difference. Besides I see some wing tip droop in pictures (which Mark does not see, so there probably isn't any) so I will build (sand) that in too.
Ok. So the extreme camber of the TD-4 at the wings root evens out to somewhat less at the tips. (At least when you are using replacement balsa) So I guaged the bend and cut/sanded some 1/4" balsa to fit with the fat part toward the leading edge. Sorry, but this gets complicated. The TD-4's wing is straight accross at the leading edge and tapered at the trailing edge, not much about 1/4" at the tip to zero at the root.
Cut it that way. But when I glued the tips on I unknowling (aka stupid, not paying attention) swapped ends glueing it with the fat end toward the trailing edge. Hmm, toss the whole thing or come up with something. So as a cure I tapered the wing on what was the leading edge to match the trailing edge, not factory but it works.
As the center piece is unattached I just swapped it end for end. Works for me. Bevel sanding at the tips and three coats of Minwax sanding sealer now I have my droop and 21 3/16".
I have to do something about the rubber band hold-on's. They do not fit nicely into the slots. I'm thinking pegs maybe or eyelets in the wing itself pulling straight up instead of at an angle.
Gloss yellow, a decal or two. Thinking about painting the plastic matte blue, same as I have used on the Corsairs.

I like it Bob ….. Nothing wrong with the camber relaxing out toward the tips for a sport type IMO…. Kind of related to washout which adds stability in FF and R/C types …. I bet the original wing may have even had this to some degree….Regardless, Changing an orphan into a jewel

Thanks Robert, I could have extended the extreme root camber all the way out to the tips by duplicating the center section but that would have required about an inch deep chunk of balsa to do. But, I have made up my mind to build another more correct wing for it. Quite simple and I have the balsa. Curious though wondering how this odd-ball wing would fly. Might have my son give it a try. That extreme camber has me wondering, seems like it's pushing a lot of air.
My last choice of blue got the nod. It was that "Bonds to plastic" that got me. Rust-oleum takes awhile to fully cure (about 7 days) so assembly will have to wait.
