A four legged Fox

Re: A four legged Fox
Yes, one of the lower necessary predators, we have them here, too in NM. Keeps down the rodent and rabbit population. Until they built about 40 houses behind us 10 years ago, with last completed about 4 years ago directly behind us, separated only by a city alley way, it was an empty streetless 30 acres behind our house all the way to Llano Estacado Street, main east-west northern drag that became a rural NM highway outside of town. We had prairie dogs, foxes, owls, tortoises, etc.
On our acre lot, gray fox dug a burrow underneath my 8'x6' metal shed and had pups about 4 years ago. We'd hear their cries. Didn't bother them, then after like 2 months, maybe 3, they moved on. We'd see them occasionally in the front yard until about two years ago.
With all the house construction, they moved westward into the uncultivated farmer fields. We do have occasional bunnies though, and squirrels of course.
Nice thing about living semi-rurally, we had our own eco-system to watch, even prairie dog holes only 50 feet from our house. Plus, not being in a big city, we pay less in property tax.

Re: A four legged Fox
In my Un-incorporated neighborhood (Plainfield, IL --- far suburb of Chicago 60 mile as the crow flies), I have seen a red fox and a short legged gray fox wondering through the neighborhood.
Saw the short gray fox a couple of weeks ago chasing after the neighbor's cat.
Sorry, but I was rooting for the fox.
These neighbors just let their cats out to wonder around the yards and poop where they want (in my nice flower beds!).
The neighbor's cats are a Calico, another is some mixed breed and a Manx.
The fox saw and was chasing after the Manx cat. That Manx is a big cat!
This summer I was able to get a photo of the red fox "wolfing" down on a rabbit in my front yard.
It was something to see that red fox chasing that rabbit through the yards.
That rabbit ran from my neighbor's house across the street, down through my ditch popped up the other side.
All the while that fox was on its tail.
The mistake the rabbit made was running down and out from the ditch.
That fox jumped the ditch and landed on the rabbit. The fox gave the rabbit a quick shake and fell lifeless.
I ran inside to get my camera to snap some photos and got photos of what I could.
And what the fox couldn't eat right there, he took it with him back to the den, wherever
it is in the neighborhood?

Re: A four legged Fox
That cute bobcat, Charles, reminds me of the killer instincts still in household domestic cats. When I had cats in the 1980's (later learned my son was badly allergic to cat danders - last time I had cats as pets), they would occasionally leave dead birds and mice on our placemat just outside the kitchen back door.
I'd just leave them, they'd be gone in a couple hours. (Our cats would retrieve them.)

Nature can be cruel, Fox vs. Bunny. It's just natures way. Helps maintain balances. Survival of the fittest. David Attenbough describes it best in his PBS series. I would love to see a Bobcat here, we look for them on the game camera but so far no-shows except for this very large orange tabby that somehow has evaded Fox and Hawk/Eagle alike.
