Cox Engine of The Month
Super Bee 049

Super Bee 049
In the early 70s I had a PT-19. The box said it had a Baby Bee engine. Loved it. But then my Dad bought me a Cox P-40 Warhawk. It came with an Engine called a “Super Bee” 049 engine. The plane started and ran with much more authority than the Baby bee and the P-40 was much faster. A real handful for me. In my latest
Searches and reading I don’t see anything about a Super Bee engine. Am I imagining things from my past ?

Re: Super Bee 049
Yes. Mine was green with camouflage. It had the 5cc metal tank on the back of the engine. I remember the 3 blade prop with the yellow nose cone. I’m toying around with the idea of getting another one Fun times. I mostly flew the PT-19. The P40 was quite a handful for a 12 year old. Hahaha. I can still remember hoping that the fuel would run out soon. Getting dizzy. I’m going to start practicing again spinning around in circles. Got to get some of my newly acquired planes up in the air. Stay

Matt from EXmodelengines tells me it was a dual ported cylinder over the Baby bee version

As far as I know the cylinder porting was the only difference. Bob's pictures show a high compression head but I don't believe this was original equipment on the P-40. The cylinder should have "P40" stamped on it. It was done to compensate for the extra weight of the P-40 airframe.

Wow. I’ve never seen a Cox plane with the cylinder head sticking out of the bottom. Usually to the side or out the top. It’s definitely more scale like out the bottom

Old engine rod. How can you tell by looking the difference between a regular compression head and a HIGH compression head ?

High compression head has a knurled imprint on the top fin. The low compression does not have any thing on the top fin.

What he said.
I believe that some of the current production high compression heads do not have the knurling n the top.
The Cox P-40 changed several times and could have the engine either vertical or inverted, depending on the year.

Re: Super Bee 049
First Couple years the cylinders were stamped 'P-40' sometime around '60 they went to a '1' stamp (350-1) always used a stand glowhead.
Re: Super Bee 049
Along with a PT19 and Helldiver, I recall having a P40 as a kid...and YES it did come with a Super Bee. That engine was by far more powerful than the other Babe Bee engines and it did have a dual intake port cylinder. I recall disassembling it to see why it was so much more powerful. I used it for years, post P40 crashes, as my strongest engine (until I got a TD) :-) Once the plastic models were crashed enough, we just started to build balsa models which survived so much better...or at least were repairable. Planes like the CG Wizard and Stuntman 23 were next. In the old days, the product engines were mostly babe bees and could easily be re-deployed on another kit. If I recall correctly, the Helldiver had a red backplate engine with no tank...it sat forever and was never re-used.

Re: Super Bee 049
Definitely more potential for crash damage with it slung underneath the nose. Maybe the reason they changed it.
