Ramón is a friend who lives many kilometers from my city, however, the friendship that was generated was largely due to our mutual friend Roberto Ishkanian, who was the author of the magazine “el Aeromodelista” and who unfortunately, like many, already Como You know, he lost his life to COVID 19 a few years ago.
Ramón, for his part, knows that I really like Cox engines, that's why one day he tells me that he has a Cox .09, that with a lot of effort his father gave it to him as a reward for his achievements with the engine. studies of him.
Ramón has enjoyed that engine a little and wants to restore it to be able to use it in radio control, so he asked me if we could do something, I gladly told him yes, I offer to do all the work, to my liking. I am very happy that Ramón trusted me to tune his engine and install the rev regulation ring.

Then Ramón tells me, I also have my Cox .010, I bought that many years ago and I didn't give it much love... I want to give it to you Mauricio because I know you are going to take care of it. Put it to work, I want to give you that gift because I know how much you value these engines.
Finally I thanked him for his gesture and I am happy to have another Cox .010 that I will soon have in my hands.
Meanwhile and after this story behind the engines, I will show you the step by step of the recovery of Ramón's Cox .09 engine.
Thank you Ramón for your friendship and this enormous gesture.

Eric, my friend...that's great, thank you for your message... ....I share with you and the CEF team how I am going with the restoration process of the .09...
The engine parts have some bites in the metal. You will see in the photos that I applied, lathe, files manually to improve the aesthetics of the engine.
I am also repairing the carter body.
I am making an iron rpm control ring, with two control notches to facilitate the placement of the throttle control.
Here are the photos,,,

The engine runs beautifully and throttles well Mauricio Very Happy…. The throttle ring is impressive but also the aluminum sleeve you made for the plastic carb body…. It had to fit as a saddle both an angle and a taper…. Excellent craftsmanship!!

Thanks guys for your comments!!
Friend Eric!, the adjustment of the aluminum tube in the body of the crankcase is a job that is done with files, everything must fit in unison, it is a job of patience since you are carving the metal and testing the adjustment.
It could be solved with a simple ring, but I like everything to be a single set and for this work is necessary.
Once everything is perfectly fitted (it must come under pressure), you remove it, place epoxy and replace the ring, press with the venturi itself and hold it until the epoxy hardens, job finished.
I made these rings on how many bodies, .020/.049/.051 and .09, never on a .010...maybe the time has come!...I have to see how the body of the .010 Cox that I have looks like that Ramón gave me.

Well today I sent the Cox .09 to my friend Ramón, I hope he enjoys it a lot.
His father had given him that engine, so I hope that spiritually when he uses it in one of his model airplanes, he connects spiritually with it.
The motor does not have its original box, so I prepared something for it so that when I do not use the motor, I can leave it protected.

Well friends, I started working on the Cox .010 but here comes the bad news.
Make the ring for the venturi on the crankcase body.
I did a general cleaning of the engine.
I find that the engine has completely finished compression, that is, there is no compression, not even a little, the wear between piston and cylinder is important.
I then decided to make some bolts to expand the piston.
Everything was in vain, I couldn't recover the compression.
I really did everything in my power, but I'm not going to be able to save this engine.
The parts are there, as spare parts for another engine, or if a .010 piston and cylinder appears then the replacement would have to be made.
Well friends, this boy made me work hard, I had a lot of fun but it's time to say that's as far as I am...

Mauricio, I see a small dimple in the middle of the piston top. Like the ball end of the rod punching a hole into the piston..I had that experience with a 049 COX piston and the compression was lost through that small hole in the piston top....if this is the case then at least the cylinder is still usable?

Wonderful post Mauricio from the beginning to this point and continuing......

But, sad news

"Everything was in vain, I couldn't recover the compression."  Sad   Sometimes things just do not go right.

However, on a positive note......I love this picture and I'm sure Ramon will love and respect this gift.

Yes I too I see something strange with the top of the piston I have never seen a hole in a piston but it is possible if this is the problem the piston could be welded maybe Huh... ? Maybe a jeweler equipped to make crome plating Could bring this piston back to life by adding a plating would increase the size of the piston by a few microns or more if it repeats the plating twice This .010 engine wit the black and non anodised crankcase seems like mine, the cylinders are not taperd So it would be normal for the piston to pass through the cylinder

No no, the piston is perfect, perhaps it could be a grease stain since I took the photo in the process of trying to recover the piston.
I leave here a more clearly visible photo.
Roberto, I know "sometimes things don't work out", but everything is there, the pieces are there, I should recover it, I don't want to leave those bones in a drawer...maybe I will use this engine as a way to take measurements for future accessories I don't know....it's a shame that it's stuck there in time....

It would be understandable why a much favored .010 TD would through considerable use, wear out quickly. Per

Sceptre Flight: Engine Analysis 88, Cox Tee-Dee .010, by R.H. Warring, Oct. 1961

With a stroke of 0.226 inch (5.74 mm) and maximum BHP of 0.028 at 32,000 RPM, at say, 2.5 minutes run time on a full tank, piston travel is 0.226 in x 2 per rev x 32,000 rev/min x 2.5 min = 36,160 inches x 1/12 ft/in x 1/5,280 miles/ft = 0.5707 miles (0.936 km).

That little piston went a little over a half mile of travel (or nearly 1 km) in that cylinder for just one run.

It would not be hard to understand that with several years of continuous use, that it would wear itself out needing replacement parts. Only difference is, back in the 1960's, one could obtain parts at the local hobby store or any major department store or mail order house, or even factory.

Today, it is a very special engine that has become more rare with time.

OH Man thats to bad about the piston how does the cly look? Is it worn out ? think maybe a few taps with a flat punch would spread the piston enough to make some useable compression ? That is all i got / you did a very nice jog on the .09 and box/fit . Your friend will bee very Happy ! ! Easter Bunny

Thanks guys!
Jorge, very good information! I'm going to print that data and treasure it my friend! Thank you.
Eric, thank you for your message and for your wishes, the same to you dear friend!
So so….
If you are on a beach and you know you are going to die, but if you try to swim across the ocean there is only one chance of surviving the attempt, then what do you do?
Well, I started trying to cross the ocean and came to my end.
I make this introduction to explain what I did with that detonated Cox .010!
I have information that in my country there are no spare parts for this engine, neither new nor used, I searched eBay and there are no .010 cylinders and pistons either, therefore, dead for dead, there I went, here are the steps:
I got a diesel engine truck piston, since the aluminum alloy is harder.
Make a piston.
With a piece of iron from a scrap PC printer I started making a connecting rod.
Using the back of a high-speed steel drill bit, fabricate the bolt.
The adjustments were incredibly difficult, but I made good progress on the project.
I assembled the whole thing, assembled the engine and began attempting the odyssey.
The engine suddenly jammed, the cause was the piston pin crossed, of course the thin surface of 0.55 millimeter on each side of the piston may not offer enough resistance.
It was a job that required a lot of effort, but unfortunately it was not possible to achieve it.
I learned a lot in this process and it was my last chance to get the engine running, .
Finally, and after having exhausted everything, this engine becomes a donor of its parts to recover other engines in the future, that is, the useful parts, become Cox .010 spare parts.
