I love the smell of Cat Pi*s in the Morning
Unbelievably the Glow still works but emits a 'heady bouquet'...

They are really never dead,,just resting comfortably in hibernation, awaiting that day .

Johnny Boy:
As to backplates, soak, soak, soak, lightly scrub, scrub, scrub If you don't like what's left, replace the BP and install new gaskets especially the venturi gasket.

Morning David
Are you sure about the scrub? I had this (very) vague idea that the colour comes off the brassolike backplate.

JB:
Just looked at the picture again. It's not really a brass plate but it has a brass-like coating that has been partially worn away by corrosion. I don't believe it possible to "restore" the finish. If cosmetics are a concern BP replacement is indicated IMO.
Otherwise, clean the BP and engine as best you can, replace the gaskets and enjoy!
Snowing here now.

Then you soaked, soaked, soaked as I advise JB! Nice job. You didn't need to scrub, scrub, scrub.

Very nice. I find bringing engines back from the dead fun
.049
Nice clean up. I bought a group of engines several years ago on ebay. Engines were covered in dirt/dust etc. Hard to tell what they were but spotted a Thermal Hopper. When they arrived costing $47.00+ I was quite happy. Thremal Hopper/Space Hopper/Silver Bee and Blackwidow. + a parts engine. Most must have sat and collected mucho dust. They all are good and Thermal Hopper looks like never run. The Space Hopper had minor marks but in great shape. My first contest type FF model was Midwest Sateilite 320 with Cox Space Hopper. Back in early 60's. I now have two Hunter kits od 320 and good Space Hopper. Later project. Never know what will turn up.

You'll lose the color, but sandblasting comes to mind. Now why would that come to my mind? Let me think...... Oh yeah, I took one apart in as bad of shape, sandblasted the backplate, tank, crankcase, thrust washer. Actually looks very nice. Just cover up any important areas.
