In response to a number of forum members' requests, I'm starting this new thread in the hope that we can centralise all the Cox engine reviews, tests etc. in one place, and use the thread for that purpose only.

To this end, would members with these items please post them HERE in future?

Kim and I hope that Admin will help us out in our endevours on members behalf, by making this thread a "Sticky" so that anyone can find it without the need for tedious searches.

It would also help if members who have posted reviews or tests in other places in the Forum could find them and re-post here.

Cox Engine Tests/reviews ONLY Empty Holland Hornet Factory Mod Peter Chinn July 1960 M.A.N. and Addtional Info

Post  Kim Wed Apr 25, 2012 6:15 pm

Mr. Chinn's take on a "Factory Modified Holland Hornet" from the July 1960 issue of Model Airplane News.

Also, Mark's Original Owner's Manual and his explanation of the "Timer Tank" feature on some of these engines.

Here's how the timer tank worked: Fire up the bad boy, set needle, just prior to launching your plane, you'd move the wire spring (held in place by small groove) another sping around the top of tube, inside the tank (see photos) would push the tube down sealing the top half of tank off, the bottom would be full and you'd have a premeasured, predictable run time.

I wonder how the compression was set.....it can only be reduced by any intervention, but not increased?  Even by lapping that removes material, compression will not increase...He may have meant compression ratio setting by head gaskets or shims under the cylinder, instead of compression setting?? How does one add taper to a stock piston without reducing compression?

Just would like to understand the background, not doubting that overall the performance was increased..

Andras, I’m not completely sure but I’m guessing compression was “set” would be to bring it to Cox factory specifications by setting ideal deck height (max compression) and then the user could adjust using head shims for fuel and weather…..  I’m sure you’ve seen the instructions for setting deck height from Kustom Kraftsmanship that’s been posted a few times…. I decided to play with it on .020’s a little just out of curiosity and made the brass disc and bored out a burned out head…. Some of the PeeWee’s I have will not rotate past the disc due to interference….. Some will not touch it at all…. I adjusted Pageboy’s engine crankcase to barely touch it with a piece of .001” copper foil on top of the piston …Maybe that leaves a little room for ball/socket set?….

Another thing I found interesting in the KK instructions was to look for a SPI gap of about .012” on a .049….Best guess to figure it on a .020 was a percentage of stroke which puts it at about .009”…. Getting the deck level brings SPI very close to that figure…

With the adjustments I’m still using two head gaskets on 25% Nitro ….Just my thoughts on compression to be taken lightly Very Happy

Yes ,Robert, this is what I meant, that it was the compression ratio, and not the compression, which was set by shims, head gaskets etc..the shim will also help set the SPI and change timing..so most probably the ratio was set..

Cox #5 TD .051 cylinder has a tapper fit, Joe lapped the cylinder in for more power.

The engine is in a time lock, untouched after Joe's pro setup.
This state of condition is very rare for 2023 and needed to be documented.

At some point will run the engine to document the performance of a fully
reworked TD .051 with the supplied prop and KK bushing for the APC 5.7x3
