what would be better a smaller prop or larger on a stander stock .049 ?

It depends on the particular application.

I'd usually recommend a 5x3 or 6x3 prop. The 6x3 may be better for slower, 'sport' flying be it control line or R/C. The 5x3 is a good all around propeller, and is available in a basic variety as well as a competition series.

with Matt, it depends on the application. I usually run 5x3s but I have played with the 5x4s, 6x3s, 6x4s, 5.5x3s as will as some 3 bladed props (not so easy to get these days) on my .049s

A 3-blade isn't a bad prop in the right application, but they usually restrict power in .049's in my opinion.

If its an aircraft where power will not be an issue then a 3-blade will work fine.

What are you looking to do with your engine?

I think the 3 blade props cavitate at the comparatively extreme RPM model engines turn, thus the power loss.

As above CJ depends on what model and What you want it to do.
Easiest way to imagine it is the bigger a prop is, is akin to a higher
Gear on your car or cycle. Low gear great for quick getaway and going
Up a hill. High gear not much fun going up a hill but fast going
Down.

Sorta but that being said, why do 3Ders use late diameter low pitch props?
Because they climb better.

Exactly because it's like being in first gear all the time.
If you get into trouble you just open the throttle and point the
Nose up. Also coming down they act like a brake.
On my QQYAK I run an APC 16x4 Wide, on the down lines
You can actually hear the hisssss as the prop slows the
Thing down.
