Maidened the Bean.....wasn't impressed. The engine ran like crap in the air even though on the ground it was great. It kept doing roller coaster like climbs and dives as the engine surged. I did one loop and just hung on until the engine quit. Once it did it was the best glide of all my planes so I know it's not tail heavy. I think I have a fuel draw issue.

Broke out the BRM and flew that bugger hard and fast. Many loops a really poor lazy 8 that ended me upside down so I flew 2 laps inverted and then the engine quit and I landed the same way. Since the reinforcing and epoxy work it's nearly indestructable. It was a whole different plane tonight. I did move my leadouts a little rearward and I think it had a big effect. Here is a pic of the dirty birds after the flight. Click on the linkee if the pics no workee.

A faceoff! Those tanked engines can be so fussy. If it glided well, then it probably flies well. Good to hear. Swap engines if it keeps acting up. A Medallion with an SPI set and a party balloon worked great on mine.

Tear down the engine, check for crap behind reed, check the venturi gasket. Venturi gaskets made of fuel tubing work wonders.

Yeah, I always go through my engines before mounting. That's one thing I am pretty particular about. I use fuel tube gaskets as well. If the reed had dirt in it then I probably would notice it all the time. My guess is the new fuel pickup tube has a kink or it's somehow blocked. I'll break it down and do a once over.

I could always do a medallion except I would have to come up with a way to mount it Rusty.

No worries Happydad! I have really thick skin!

Good to hear Ron, Congrats!

Had a really nice Beech Staggerwing that I finished up superbly. Motor ran great on the pad, once it was released it did the surge thing for about 1/2 circle. It finally caught the needle and did a loose line wingover right overhead and then proceeded to dig a straight-in hole into the asphalt. Bits and pieces.

I've got a bunch of those. Unfortunately the Bean has the plastic snout that acts as a landing gear mount and an engine mount. So those won't work unless I dimantle the front end and since I epoxied it like crazy there is a good chance I will destroy it! Very Happy

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Don't forget Ron they lean out quite a bit once in the air.
Try richening it quarter or even half a turn.

I suppose anything is possible John. I went through it last night and made some adjustments to the fuel pickup tube. I ground ran it after and it ran ok. A little hard to needle, but I am going to have to really test it where it counts, in the air.

JB's advice is well founded.

It is a common practice experienced CL pilots to lauch with slightly rich needles, some even to the point of nearly four-cyling the engine. Flying the pattern will cause the engine to break into peak RPM's just when the pilot needs and extra "boost" of power to complete the manuver gracefully.

A good stunt plane will have enough wing area that it need not require peak RPM all the time. Competitive stunt flying requires grance and finese rather than all out speed.
