I need to build a plane for my RR1. I want to build something with fairly classic appeal that will compliment the RR1 with due respect. Something pretty small so it will really fly hot and tight. The Li'l Satan was a perfect match, but it's moved on to more wild and dangerous activities. I see lots of Baby Ringmasters around here. Any other suggestions?

I am partial to the FlightStreak for nostalgia, looks fast, and with your finishing skills will be a very sharp looking model.....your scratch build skills would not be challenged scailing it to a good size for the RR1

The BRM is a good choice. What kind of design appeals to you most? Are you looking to do stunt, sport or combat?

I know ton's of designs that it would work and look well on. Let me know and then I could offer some good suggestions.

Edit: My original Dumas Scout kit shows an option for an RR1 in the plans. Others that come to mind are the li'l Tomahawk and the Miss Ashlee.

I have plans for the Tomahawk if needed.

I'm in love with the Flite Streak but I already have two of them. I do like the sleek predatory bird looks like that.

My usual type of fun flying. I just like to go out there and snap it around in every direction I can think of. I'm getting a little better at my wingovers and overhead 8s.

Rusty, two questions, do you want a profile or a built up fuselage. Also, do you want a built up wing or a plank style, I've got a bazillion 1/2A plans in my laptop library. Let me know what you want and I'll shoot some ideas to you. Stunter, racer, combat. etc......

I've got one plan that I've wanted to build for age's , it's the Keil Kraft Radian. It is a Stunter with a builtup fuse/wing with flaps. It would be a neat plane for your RR1. Plan comes with templates for everything.

One that I have thought of building is the Pinto. If I remember right it has a full fuse and flaps.

The Keil Kraft Radian looks pretty cool. I've been wanting a plane with flaps. I just looked at it and wondering what's the wingspan on it.

Wingspan is 22" on the plan I have, the other one that I really like is the Keil Kraft Phantom, full fuselage with a planked airfoil wing. It was drawn by Walt Musciano, most of his models were pretty cool. I built my first trainer from his book, put a .15 tee dee on it and made it a racer after I learned to fly. The Pinto is a smaller version of the famous "Oriental" which was designed in the 50's by Dee Rice, Dee is on the Ringmaster forum all the time. It is kitted by RSM models and is also a flapped airplane. I have a full sized Oriental and it is one of my favorite planes to fly, has a OS .46 LA on it, did my first inside loop with this plane. I think a smaller version would be cool. I think this plane has nice lines.

I went on to RSM and priced the Pinto, think I might have to build one. The kit is pricey at $75.00. If you wanted to go the cheap route you can buy the plans, ribs and canopy for $36.00 in the builder's section and then buy the rest of your wood at your local hobby shop. That's the route I would go.

What's a local hobby shop? Nearly thing of the past in most regions of the US.

I have a "Pinto" under construction and nearly complete at this time but I would only recommended it for modelers with considerable experience. Although plans are included much is left to one's imagination and building skill.

I'd further recommend a fuel pressure bladder rather than a balloon or metal fuel tank. "See Rusty's two videos on this thread's header."

Be sure your RR1 runs well inverted.

About as well as any tanked Bee, if you want to fly upside down you'd better get'er done early in the flight.

Yes, I'm spoiled, I have one really good hobby shop on this side of town that has a reasonable supply of balsa and other building supplies. But the best part about living in Albuquerque and flying CL is the president of our CL club is Jim Snelson and he runs control line central (J&J hobbies) which next to Brodak's is probably the best CL shop in the country. He's in Corrales about 20 minutes away. I try to go about once a month to stock up on stuff. If you haven't dealt with Jim or been on his website I would highly recommend it for your needs. He's a nice guy too!

I like the looks of the Pinto but I don't think I can put a radial mounted RR1 on it. I need something with about 23" wingspan or less. This antique RR1 is more akin to a Black Widow on mild steroids than a Tee Dee. It was a perfect match for the Li'l Satan, but as I mentioned she's all souped up and happy with her new Tee Dee now. 70mph Satan.

Jim:

A further thought on the "Pinto/RRI" combo.

The plane design is intended for a front, rather than rear, rotary valve engine. The engine sits inverted within a fairly constrictive cowling. With the air intake in the rear the engine it would be sucking a lot of it's own exhaust (Cough,cough) making good performance highly doubtful.

My "Pinto" will be running a healthy TD .051 (front rotary) and I anticipate no such problems.

Although $75 is a bit steep I don't believe it makes economic sense to build only from the plans. By the time all the kit components are purchased you'll find yourself way over the $75 kit price tag and your time chasing down what you need.

Things like the LG, wheels, specialized control horns, bellcrank, control rods, cable lead-outs etc. add up fast let alone the maple engine mounts and balsa all of which are included in the RSM kit.

BTW, I plan to use Robart "1/2A nylon hinges rather than the stiched hinges shown on the plan.

The "Pinto" is a very attractive and stunt-capable design that will be expensive to build as well as purchase. Unless the personal statisfaction of building from a plan is important to you, build from the RSM kit.

RSM owner, Eric Rule, is a very nice and well-informed fellow. I've had several personal contacts with Eric and he has always been very helpful.

I really love the stitched hinges Ken taught me how to make. Tight and firm joint with completely free movement. Double thickness of Monokote along the hinge line.

Kim,

CLC has a amazing supply of CL stuff, he even makes control systems for a specific plane if you give him the dimensions. Jim helped Walter Ulmand kit some of his first kits. Walter's kits are over on stunthanger under Aero products. He makes some great stuff. I really want to build one of his Dick Mathis profile stuka's. Might be my winter build this year.

I love scratch building, I'm pretty sure I could build it under the 75$ price tag if I put my mind to it. I do understand the convenience of a kit is quite attractive to some people. I get a kick out of making something that I can fly from scratch.

I love the lines on the Pinto also. My son has the Oriental. I think it was Dave building the Pinto, sent pics.
